Relay for Life raises $157K

Cool nighttime temperatures and West Texas wind didn't stop community members from showing their support for the Howard-Glasscock County Relay For Life 2012.

For 24 hours, Blankenship Field turned into a place of remembrance, celebration and hope in the fight against cancer. During wrap-up ceremonies Saturday morning, residents were able to see just how well their dedication paid off. The overall total raised — with more money still coming in and a few fundraisers left— was $157,706.43.

College receives boost to fundraising efforts

Howard College trustees will get an update on construction plans for the district's San Angelo campus when they hold their monthly meeting at 12:30 p.m. Monday in the Student Union Building's Tumbleweed Room.

College officials announced earlier this year plans to expand its San Angelo campus with the addition of two buildings adjacent to the West Texas Training Center. Total price tag for the project is estimated at between $8 million and $9 million, said Dr. Cheryl Sparks, Howard College president.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
•JONATHAN WAYNE KELSEY, 51, of 1406 Sycamore, was arrested Friday on a warrant from other agency.
• MICHAEL ARTHUR BROWN, 41, of 3606 Calvin St., was arrested Friday on a warrant for accumulated items/weeds/rubbish.
• GUADALUPE MORENO, 44, of 807 Creighton, was arrested Friday on a warrant for failed to maintain financial responsibility.

Dianne Standefer Cash

Dianne Standefer Cash, 59, of Ashdown, Ark., died Wednesday, April 11, 2012.

Ms. Cash was born Sept. 13, 1952, in Stanton, Texas.

Survivors include one daughter, Virginia Walker; a son-in-law, Damon Walker; and a step-granddaughter, Winter Walker of Maud, Texas; her stepfather, Jack Strain of Colorado City, Texas; one brother, Terry Standefer and wife Diane of Cedar Park; one sister, Kathy Benson of Granbury, Texas; a half-brother, Bill Standefer and wife of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a number of other relatives.

Jimmie Fay Frazier of Arlington, Texas, completed her earthly mission April 19, 2012. She was 87.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, April 22, 2012, at Moore Funeral Home, 1219 N. Davis Drive, Arlington. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 23, at North Davis Church of Christ, 1601 N. Davis Drive, Arlington, with graveside service at Brandon Cemetery in Hillsboro, Texas.

Frank 'Frankie' Fierro Jr.

Frank "Frankie" Fierro Jr., 64, of Big Spring died Thursday, April 19, 2012, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2012, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parrish. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.

A prayer vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 22, 2012, in the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.

Frankie was born Jan. 8, 1948, in Big Spring where he lived his entire life. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served in Vietnam.

Frankie was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parrish.

Ruben Earl Steadmon

Ruben Earl Steadmon, 87, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, April 18, 2012, in a local nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 23, 2012, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park with the Rev. Joey Bacon, associate pastor at Trinity Baptist Church, officiating.

He was born July 19, 1924, near Knott, Texas, and married Jean Randell April 15, 1950 in Carlsbad, N.M. She preceded him in death Dec. 26, 2001.

One dead in house fire

A structure fire during the early morning hours today in the 600 block of N.W. Fifth Street claimed the life of an unidentified person. Law enforcement official are working to establish the cause of death and identity of the victim.

According to Big Spring Fire Marshall Carl Condray, the victim — believed to be an adult male — was discovered inside the home, located at 603 N.W. Fifth St., just minutes after firefighters arrived on the scene.

Relay for Life set for Friday

Put on your purple and head to Blankenship Field on Friday afternoon. Howard and Glasscock County Relay For Life 2012 will take place from 8 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday.

Registration will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Registered individuals will receive T-shirts and a $5 dinner coupon to be used at any of the team food vendors. The coupons are sponsored by the Hodnett Family in honor of Butch Hodnett.

Opening ceremonies will take place at 7:30 p.m. and the official first lap — the Survivors Lap — will take place at 8 p.m. A survivors reception will follow under the event tent.

• DAVID ALEGRIA, 27, of Corpus Christi, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
• FRANK FIERRO JR., 64, of 603 N.W. Fifth St., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of public intoxication.
• CHRISTINA FUENTES, 32, of 2518 Albrook Circle, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant from another agency.
• MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ, 19, of 410 S. Aylesford, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant for consumption of alcohol by a minor.
