2 for the road: Steers, Lady Steers win at Snyder

SNYDER — Just call the Big Spring Steers and Lady Steers the Road Warriors.

The Steers and Lady Steers both won their second road game in succession Friday night at Snyder to pull back into District 5-3A contention.

The Lady Steers evened their district record at 2-2 with a 51-41 win over Snyder, while a big second-half rally propelled the Steers to a 51-36 win over the Tigers which improved Big Spring's league record to 2-1.

Both teams returning to action to district action Friday at Abilene Wylie.

Erlinda L. Fierro, 82, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Services will be held Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 7893 Grissom Rd., San Antonio, Texas, 78250.
She was born Nov. 25, 1929, in Big Spring, Texas, the first of 10 children born to the late Jose H. Lopez and Juanita H. Lopez.

Frances Bell Sain Thornton

Frances Bell Sain Thornton, 93, of Georgetown, Texas, and formerly of San Antonio, Texas, died Jan. 12, 2012.
Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, in the Chapel of Mission Park South Funeral Home in San Antonio, Texas. Interment will follow in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Paul ‘Pete’ Petree

Paul "Pete" Petree, 70, of Midland, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, in a Houston hospital. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at Evergreen Cemetery in Stanton, with High Priest of the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Arthur Allen, officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 20, 2012, at Gilbreath Funeral Home in Stanton.

Police seek hit and run driver, vehicle

Big Spring Crimestoppers is hoping to gather crucial information regarding a hit and run accident near the intersection of Sgt. Paredez and Trades Avenue Jan. 5 that led to the death of a 62-year-old Big Spring man.
Eleutario Torres Padron, 62, was discovered in the roadway by a passerby Thursday, Jan. 5, in the 600 block of Sgt. Paredez on the city’s north side, according to police reports.

Lifting voices high

Not one, but two local students will be part of the Texas All-State Choir.
Juniors Andrea Cervantez and M’Kalee Morgan — a home-schooled Big Spring student — will travel to San Antonio as part of the All-State Choir to perform Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.
“We are so thankful for Mrs. (Anna) O’Brien and Mrs. (Linda) Lindell,” the girls said. “If it wasn’t for them working with us, we wouldn’t have made it this far.”

Re-routing power lines on county agenda

Howard County commissioners will meet to discuss a number of routine items Monday morning, including re-routing of power lines at the county jail to make way for construction of the new joint law enforcement center and approval of a new economic development project.
According to County Judge Mark Barr, there are some underground power lines at the existing county jail that will have to be relocated to make way for the joint law enforcement center, which is expected to move into its official construction phase Feb. 6.

Pedestrian hit by truck Friday evening

January 21, 2012

An 18-year-old man was transported to Scenic Mountain Medical Center Friday evening after being struck by an 18-wheeler.
The man, whose injuries were not believed to be serious, was walking along the Interstate 20 service road in Sand Springs when he was clipped by the truck at about 6 p.m.
The names of the individual who was struck and the truck driver were not immediately known.

College board to hear project updates

The bond project may essentially be over, but updates are still coming in.
“Even though the bond project has for the most part been completed, there are a few updates to be given,” Dr. Cheryl Sparks, Howard College president, said.
Those updates and information on the Early College High School initiative are among the items Howard College board members will discuss when they convene at 12:30 p.m. Monday. Updates will also be presented on campus water wells on campus and the G.C. Broughton Agriculture Complex/Phase Two.
