Nick Conner continued a family tradition.
Sebastian Hernandez started one of his own.
Motivated in different ways, both Big Spring High School Band members overcame tough competition and admitted cases of nerves to be named to the Association of Texas Small School Bands Class 3A All-State Band.
Hernandez, a senior percussionist, and Conner, a freshman trombonist, will perform with the Texas All-State Band at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center as part of the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio Feb. 11.

Police blotter

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• SCOTTY RAY BLAND, 33, of 1900 Martin Luther King Blvd., was arrested Friday on a charge of driving while licenses suspended/invalid with previous conviction and warrant from other agency.
• APRIL NICOLE TURNER, 17, of 4215 Hamilton St., was arrested Friday charged as a runaway.
• JUSTIN IVAN SPEER, 36, of 1608 E. Fifth St., was arrested Friday on a warrant for driving while license invalid.

Hangar 25 members to convene

Calling all members.
Hangar 25 Air Museum will have its annual membership meeting at 6 p.m Thursday at the hangar.
“All we ask is that people show up. They don’t need to bring anything except themselves and their smiling faces,” Stockburger said. “However, they might want to bring a jacket, it might be cold.”
Museum hours are 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The museum will be closed Saturdays until February.

Schuelke-Young wedding

January 14, 2012

Kandace Joann Schuelke of Stanton, and Corbin Heath Young of Paradise, exchanged wedding vows Dec. 31, 2011 at Circle Six Tabernacle in Lenorah, Texas.
Kandace was given in marriage by her parents, Kenneth and Patty Schuelke. Kenneth escorted his daughter down the aisle, lifted her veil, kissed her and gave her hand to Corbin.
Jeff Scott, brother-in-law of the bride, officiated the double ring exchange ceremony.
Mr. and Mrs. Corbin Young were presented to the crowd after prayer led by the bride’s father.

New schools prompt changes for students

You child may be moving next year — to a new school, that is.

At Thursday's Big Spring Independent School District board of trustees meeting, officials unveiled new maps detailing where students in grades kindergarten through 5 will attend school starting with the 2012-2013 school year.

The new attendance zones will become a necessity next year when the district opens four new elementary campuses, shuts down Bauer Elementary and converts Kentwood Elementary to a pre-kindergarten campus.

Standardized dress code gets look by BSISD officials

Local public school officials are looking at a standardized dress code as one way to help improve the learning environment at Big Spring secondary campuses.

Big Spring Independent School District officials trustees vigorously debated the idea during their monthly meeting at the high school board room Thursday night.

Proponents of a standardized dress code said the plan, which would effect students in grades 6 through 12, would help build a better learning environment at the junior high and high school.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• STEVE RODRIGUEZ, 30, of 2110 Runnels, was arrested Thursday on a charge of harassment.
• CURTIS DEWAYNE WOODRUFF, 26, of 214 N. Johnson, was arrested Thursday on warrants for manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance in a drug free zone (two counts), no driver's license – when unlicensed and a warrant from another agency.
• MANUEL GONZALES, 23, of 1101 Grafa, was arrested Thursday on a warrant for accumulated items/weeds/rubbish.

Charles 'Charlie' Trantham

January 13, 2012

Charles “Charlie” Trantham, 60, of Big Spring died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, at Myers & Smith Chapel with Chaplain Walter McCall officiating.

He was born May 29, 1951, in Germany. He lived in Big Spring most of his life. He was a truck driver for a moving company and was a member of the Church of Christ.

There are no known survivors.

Livestock show begins

January 12, 2012

Goats and lambs took the stage Wednesday during the Howard County Junior Livestock Show.

In the goat division there were two classes in each weight division. Coahoma FFA member Emilee Custer was named light weight division champion. She entered two goats, one in the Class 1, which took first place and weighed 64 pounds and the other in the Class 2 which placed fourth and weighed 75 pounds.

FISD board to appoint health council tonight

FORSAN — School district trustees here are expected to approve the appointment of a School Health Advisory Council when they hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. tonight in the administration wing board room.

SHACs are appointed to review and make recommendations on a wide variety of health-related activities, said Randy Johnson, Forsan Independent School District superintendent.
