Jeffery Curtis Dunlap, 32, of Coahoma died Friday, April 13, 2012, at University Medical Center in Lubbock. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at Myers & Smith Chapel with Eddy Pitchford, minister of the Coahoma Church of Christ, officiating.

He was born Dec. 25, 1979, to Wanda and Gary Dunlap in Big Spring, Texas. He loved to take walks, ride his bike and gardening. He loved being outside and loved playing with his nieces and nephews.

Johnny Roy Phillips

Johnny Roy Phillips, 72, previously of Big Spring, died April 4, 2012, in El Paso. Mr. Phillips was an attorney practicing in West Texas for many years before retiring in El Paso.

He is survived by his son, Bryan; daughters, Brooke and Brandy; sister, Pat Douglass; and nephew, John Douglass.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Faye Phillips; and sister, Beth Conklin Corder.

Big Spring ISD eyeing budget

Big Spring Independent School District officials are already thinking about their next budget, but few of those thoughts are pleasant.

Continued cuts in state revenue have educators across the state scrambling to balance educational needs with decreased funds, and Big Spring ISD is no exception.

When Texas legislatures crafted the state's biennial budget in 2010, they cut more than $5 billion from education expenditures. That meant local school districts would have to make do with less — in Big Spring's case, about $3 million less — over a two-year period.

HC dance troupe to take stage

Time may have sprung forward recently, but the Howard College Dance Department is taking things back with its spring concert Thursday and Friday. Students will take to the stage of the Hall Center for the Arts at 7:30 p.m. to perform “Movin' with the Movies.”

“There is a lot of history in this show,” Eulaine McIntosh, Howard College dance instructor, said. “You start seeing a lot of connection to the future when you start researching.”

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• VICTOR JOE TODD, 47, of 1301 Mt. Vernon, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• KEVIN LEE DUNLAP, 34, of 3312 Auburn, was arrested Sunday on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
• MARK MATTHEW LINDEM, 34, of 2506 Kelly Circle, was arrested Sunday on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
• ASSAULT was reported in the 1900 block of N. Highway 87.
• THEFT was reported in the 1000 block of N. Main Street.

Billy Wayland 'B.W.' Cunningham

Billy Wayland "B. W." Cunningham, 78, of Big Spring died April 13, 2012, in Midland Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2012, at the Birdwell Lane Church of Christ with Ralph Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

Christina Louise Stallings Garrard

Christina Louise Stallings Garrard, 39, of Big Spring died Friday, April 13, 2012, at her residence. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Chapel.

She was born June 19, 1972, in Hollis, Oklahoma. She had been a resident of Big Spring for 21 years, coming from Tye, Texas. In addition to a homemaker, she was a bookkeeper and office manager for Four Seasons.

Tommy Liedtke

Tommy Liedtke, 86, of Amarillo, died Friday, April 13, 2012, in Big Spring. Private family memorial services will be held at a later date. Internment will be at Llano Cemetery, Amarillo, Texas.

Tommy was born July 11, 1925, in Paducah, Texas. He married Naomi Boykin Feb. 28, 1944 in Paducah, Texas. She preceded him in death Jan. 31, 1983.
The couple moved from Paducah to Amarillo in 1952 and lived there for 60 years. Mr. Liedtke served in the United States Army during World War II in the European theater.

William M. 'Bill' Skiles

William M. "Bill" Skiles, 95, of Big Spring, died Sunday, April 15, 2012 in a local hospital. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
