VAMC renaming ceremony Wednesday

The time is here …

Wednesday, the VA Medical Center's name will officially become the George H. O'Brien Jr. VA Medical Center. A special ceremony is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., following a reception at 3:30 p.m.

“We're excited that this has become a reality and we will be honored to recognize such a distinguished veteran who was raised in the Big Spring community,” Iva Jo Hanslik, public affairs officer at VAMC, said.

Venue change for symphony

The gold medalist of the Van Cliburn piano competition, Hauchen Zhang, will perform with the Big Spring Symphony Orchestra in Garrett Hall of the First Methodist Church at 8 p.m. Feb. 4.

The event was to have taken place in the Municipal Auditorium, but due to a delay in construction, it was moved to Garrett Hall. Zhang, of China, is the first gold medalist to perform with the orchestra.  

Dr. Keith Graumann, conductor, said several Van Cliburn finalists have played in Big Spring, but added, “It is really special to have the gold medalist.”

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• ANNALISA IVANKA LEVARIO, 21, of 405 Pennsylvania, was arrested Monday on a charge of driving while intoxicated – blood alcohol more than .15.
• CESAR MARTINEZ, 29, of 307 N.E. 10th St., was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• CLARISSA BRIONNE TORRES, 22, of 1803 Alabama, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• JESUS CERVANTES JR., 30, of 110 N.W. Fourth St., was arrested Monday on a charge of criminal mischief.

Karen Hernandez

Karen Hernandez, 55, of Big Spring, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, at her residence. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, at Mount Olive Memorial Park with the Rev. Doug Shelley officiating.

Karen was born March 14, 1956, in Big Spring, Texas, to Laura and Clarence Trawick. She has been a lifetime resident of Big Spring. He married Gilbert Hernandez on Feb. 25, 1995, in Big Spring. She was a homemaker.

Edith P. Boyd-Gary

Edith P. Boyd-Gary, 88, of Big Spring, went to join her Lord on Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Derrick Looney, pastor of Spring Creek Fellowship, officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, at the funeral home.

She was born on May 8, 1923, in Waco, Texas.

Linda Tubbs

Linda Tubbs, 69, of Big Spring died Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Ron Westbrook officiating. Burial will be at Trinity Memorial Park.

Bobby Gene Merrick

Bobby Gene Merrick, 80, of Big Spring, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, at his residence. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, at Coahoma Cemetery with Chaplain Walter McCall officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, at the funeral home.

Bobby was born July 20, 1931, in Big Spring, Texas, and married Mattlyn Manning on Dec. 16, 1972, in Big Spring. She preceded him in death on April 3, 1996.

Mary Ferrell

Mary Ferrell, 74, of Big Spring died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel with the Rev. Doug Shelley, pastor of East Side Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be at Trinity Memorial Park.

Mary was born Sept. 11, 1937, in Webb City, Mo., to Alice and Harold Riddle. She came to Big Spring in 1973 from England. She was a homemaker and a member of First Assembly of God.

Beverly Shockley

Beverly Shockley, 71, of Carrollton, formerly of Big Spring, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, in a Carollton nursing home. Her services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.

Jimmy A. Bailey, 70, of Big Spring, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, in a Lamesa hospital. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
