Mona Faye Tinsley Walker Holman, 82, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at Christus-Schumpert Highland Hospital in Shreveeport, La., following a short illness. Funeral services will be held ft the Chapel of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Homer, La., on Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Dr. Shelby Cowling officiating. Interment will follow at Old Town Cemetery in Haynesville, La. The family received friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Jacqueline Ann Martin Durham (Christi), age 50, of Grandview, Tenn., died at her home on Dec. 1, 2011, after a 13-year battle with cancer. Services were held Dec. 4, 2011, in Crossville, Tenn.
Christi was born to Harold C. Martin and Jacqueline Martin â€śBitsyâ€ť on Jan. 24, 1961, in Big Spring, Texas. She attended Big Spring High School, and later moved to Midland, Texas, where she met her husband, Bobby Durham. The two later moved to Grandview, Tenn.
Christi worked at Lazy Boy for several years.
Bill Bennett, 80, of Big Spring, died Thursday, December 15, 2011 in a local hospital. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
More than a dozen arrests were made Wednesday during a drug sweep carried out through Big Spring by local, state and federal law enforcement officers, which also netted a large quantity of drugs and cash.
Those arrested include:
â€˘ Laquanthus Lamar Randall, 21, of 2524 Hunter, possession of a controlled substance â€“ probation revocation.
â€˘ Ruby G. Hernandez, 28, of 1401 Dixie, delivery of marijuana.
â€˘ Brian Christopher Lewis, 27, of 505 Young St., delivery of a controlled substance.
â€˘ John Allen Silen, 20, of 3224 Cornell, manufacture/delivery of a simulated controlled substance.
When little Celestina Vela decided to spread some Christmas cheer, she didn't mess around.
Celestina, a 6-year-old first-grader at Bauer Elementary, was so moved by the plight of soldiers who will have to spend Christmas away from home that she decided to do something to cheer them up.
So she sent them Christmas cards â€” lots and lots of Christmas cards.
Over the course of a few weeks, Celestina and her family collected more than 1,000 holiday greeting cards to send to U.S. military personnel serving overseas.

â€˘ JONATHAN MICHAELS SHORTEN, 24, of Houston, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant from another agency and a warrant for hindering officers discharging official duties.
â€˘ CLARISSA DEAN, 32, of 2609 Wasson Rd. Apt. 2, was arrested Wednesday on six warrants from other agencies.
â€˘ JESSEE CASTUITO DELEON JR., 43, of 1705 Highway 176, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
Curtis Brunson, 53, of Lubbock, Texas, died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, at his residence. A come-and-go memorial will be held from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at the Brunson home at 3606 Hamilton in Big Spring.
Curtis was born Aug. 8, 1958, in Big Spring and graduated from Big Spring High School. He attended Howard College School of Nursing and later earned his registered nursing degree. He was working as a trauma nurse in Lubbock. He was a Christian.
Kathleen Daughtrey, 90, passed away peacefully Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011. She was born May 9, 1921, in Greenville, Texas, to Claude Williams and Bernice (Crutchfield) Williams.
Her mother passed away when she was two years old. She then was cared for by her father and her grandparents Williams and her grandparents Cruthchfield. In 1927, her father married Beatrice (Richardson) Williams, who Kathleen loved dearly, in Brown County, Texas, and always called â€śMother.â€ť
Denver Leeon Pettitt, 77, of Big Spring died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at the 14th and Main Church of Christ with Rick Cunningham and Doyle Maynard officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at the funeral home.
Leeon was born May 3, 1934, in Hermleigh, Texas, and married Patsy Gotcher on Nov. 29, 1957, in Big Spring, Texas. She preceded him in death April 25, 1998. He then married Donna Hunter on Nov. 20, 1998.
Leah Risetter Cooper, 90, of Big Spring died Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, at Marcy House. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Alive in Christ Lutheran Church with the Rev. Carroll Kohl officiating.
She was born Nov. 8, 1921, in Concord, Iowa to Clara and C.M. Pearson. She married Alan Risetter on Dec. 2, 1940. He preceded her in death in 1970.
They moved to Big Spring in 1963 from Marshal Town, Iowa. She later married Claude Cooper in 1988 and he preceded her in death in 2001. She owned and operated the Desert Sands Motel and Restaurant. She later cooked at Brass Nail.
