Trinity Memorial Park has been hosting Memorial Day ceremonies for more than two decades, and this year will be no different.
The 28th annual Memorial Day Ceremony is set for 2 p.m. Monday. The ceremony will honor Howard County veterans. Veterans families have sponsored the event by purchasing flags â more than 100 âwhich will fly in the Avenue of Flags.
âThis is a great way to refocus on what the reason is for Memorial Day. It allows us to honor those who have chosen to serve our country in the Armed Forces,â Phillip Welch, Trinity Memorial Park facility manager, said.
Polls in this yearâs political party primaries will open at 7 a.m. Tuesday throughout the Crossroads area, with voters deciding which Republican and Democrat candidates will move on in the election process.
Howard County Elections Administrator Saundra Bloom and her team of clerks are ready to wrap up the primaries, despite a tumultuous election season in the state of Texas.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
â¢ LAUREN LARCH SMITH, 24, of 1501 S. Scurry, was arrested Friday on charges of assault family violence threat or offensive touch (two counts).
â¢ CHRISTOPHER AARON SALAZAR, 24, of 1602 Sunset, was arrested Friday on a warrant from other agency.
â¢ ALBERT SMITH, 39, of 1609 Oriole St., was arrested Friday on a charge of possession of marijuana less than or equal to two ounces and warrant from other agency (two counts).
Frances âFrankieâ Herron, 77, of Crowley, formerly of Big Spring, died Saturday, May 26, 2012, in a Fort Worth nursing home. Her services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
Chelsea Churchwell Pearce is the daughter of Dennis and Debbie Churchwell of Lubbock, previously of Big Spring. She is the granddaughter of Tom and Eva Churchwell and Vaughn and Helen Martin of Big Spring.
Pearce is a 2012 graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences Texas A&M University.
She graduated with a degree in animal science from Texas Tech. While attending Texas Tech she was employed part-time with Boseman Vet. Clinic in Lubbock.
FORSAN â Forsan High School senior Darien Ashae Walker was named to The National Society of High School Scholars.
The Society recognizes top scholars and invites only those students who have achieved academic excellence.
Walker is ranked in the top 15 percent of her graduating class.
She has been a member of the Forsan High School Band and student council all four years of high school.For three years she served as chairman of public relations and community service on the student council.
Kelvi Lin Alcantar, daughter of Rick Alcantar and Jackie DeLeon of Big Spring, was born May 7, 2012, at 3:34 p.m.
Kelvi weighed 6 pounds 15 ounces and measured 19 inches.
Maternal grandparents are Jimmy and Rosalinda DeLeon Sr. Paternal grandparents are Jody and Rosa Flores and Linda and the late Kevin Branch.
She was welcomed home by her sibings, Chloe Starr, B.J. Starr and Elizabeth Alcantar.
Michael Captain Morgan, son of Jonna and Cole Morgan of Big Spring, was born April 24, 2012, at Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland.
He weighed 9 pounds 3 ounces and measured 20 Â½ inches long.
Maternal grandparent is Peggy Hopper. Paternal grandparents are Melissa and Mike Morgan.
Dean and Melanie Wheeler of Seminole, announce the engagement of their daughter Rachael Ann Wheeler of Big Spring to Justin Ryan Lewis of Odessa, son of Brad and Lisa Lewis of Odessa.
The bride-elect is a 2008 graduate of Forsan High School. She graduated from Lubbock Christian University in May. She is employed by All State Fence and Supply.
The prospective groom is a 2008 Permian High School graduate and is attending Lubbock Christian University.
The couple is set to exchange vows in a ceremony at 14th and Main Church of Christ in Big Spring on June 16, 2012.
Meridith Kaye Barr and Barrett Wade Durst were united in marriage Saturday, May 5, 2012, at First Baptist Church in Big Spring. The Rev. Mark Lindsey officiated the double-ring ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Maxwell and Kaye Barr of Coahoma. The groom is the son of Malita and Glenn Durst of Fredericksburg. Maid of Honor was Mrs.Brittney Sartor, friend of the bride, of Bastrop. Bridesmaids were Ms. Andrea Cruce, friend of bride, from Lubbock; Mrs. Sarah Barr, sister-in-law of the bride, Houston; and Mrs. Christy Barr, sister-in-law of the bride, Rowlett.
