Crossroads area residents will soon have the opportunity to pick up unique gifts, have fun and gain some knowledge as the 43rd annual Gem and Mineral Show in on the horizon.
Big Spring Prospectorâ€™s Club will put on its show March 3-4 in the Howard County Fair Barn, off FM 700. Hours will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
There is no admission fee and each youngster will be given a free polished stone at the door.
Lola Lamb, secretary-treasurer for the club, said there will be a lot to offer those who attend.
Candidates have been slow to file in area school district elections, slated for May 12.
Coahoma Independent School District has yet to place a candidateâ€™s name on the ballot for its upcoming school board election. There are three at-large positions open, currently held by Brian Moore, president of the CISD school board, Jody Reid and Alan Wright. Those wanting to file can obtain an application at the CISD administration office. Early voting in the Coahoma races â€” and all area ISD elections â€” will begin April 30. Early voting for CISD will be held at the Howard County Courthouse.
Two new candidates have tossed their hats into the ring in Big Spring for the municipal election set for May 12, as political hopefuls have filed to run in Districts 2 and 4.
In the race for the District 2 seat, local resident Carmen Moreno Harbour filed late Thursday afternoon to have her name placed on the ballot. The District 2 seat is currently held by incumbent Manuel Ramirez Jr., who has not yet filed to run for re-election.
Election talk topped the agenda of the Coahoma ISD board of trustees meeting Thursday evening.
Action was taken to call the CISD board of trustee election for May 12. The three-year terms held by Brian Moore, Jody Reid and Alan Wright are set to expire this spring. The deadline to place a name on the ballot is March 5.
After calling the election, the board approved the teacher salary schedule for 2012-13. With the approval of the new salary schedule, teachers on step 0-20 will receive $6,000 above the state base and teachers on steps 21-20 will receive an additional $540 per step.

â€¢ ADRIAN SANCHEZ VASQUEZ, 18, of Denver, Colo., was arrested Thursday on a charge of soliciting/peddling without a permit.
â€¢ ROY MARVIN COLLIER, 37, of 1307 Mt. Vernon, was arrested Thursday on a charge of driving while intoxicated â€“ third or more offense.
â€¢ BURGLARY OF A HABITATION was reported in the 1700 block of Johnson.
â€¢ THEFT was reported in the 1700 block of E. Third Street.
Marie Lopez, 65, of Big Spring died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, in an Odessa hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
Vigil services will be at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.
She was born May 15, 1946, in Big Spring, Texas, and married Felipe Lopez on Aug. 4, 1965, in Big Spring, Texas. He preceded her in death on Aug. 26, 1993.
James L. (Jimmy) Welch, 66, of Big Spring died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, in a Lubbock hospital. Services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
Calvin D. Hamilton, 79, of Big Spring died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Howard College defeated Midland College, 74-65, in a men's basketball matchup at Garrett Coliseum, but all anyone will remember about the game is a bench-clearing brawl that marred its final moments and resulted in several player ejections, at least two suspensions and MC having to finish the game with only four players on the court.
