Glen Forgus, 88, of Big Spring died Wednesday, July 13, 2011, in a local nursing home. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
Funeral services will be Wednesday in Louisiana for a Big Spring native who was killed in action in Afghanistan.
U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Michael âMickeyâ Jonathan Garcia, 27, was killed July 4 during an attack on his unit in Wardac Province, Afghanistan.
Consider it a two-day celebration of all things Aggie.
The Howard County A&M Club will hold its 12th annual scholarship fundraiser Friday and Saturday, and organizers promise a variety of events for the fans of the maroon and white of Texas A&M.
Money raised during the two-day event will go toward funding scholarships for Howard County students attending the university.
âWe currently support nine students with 15 endowed scholarships,â said Corey Green, an organizer of the event. âWe hope to add two more endowed scholarships this year.â

â¢ JESUS CERVANTES JR, 29, of 3619 Connally St., was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
â¢ LORENZO DELUNG WESLEY, 34, of 601 N. Scurry St., was arrested Monday on a charge of evading arrest/detention, assault: family violence threat or offensive touch.
â¢ ROBERT RUBEN SANCHEZ, 47, of 1023 Stadium Avenue, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
Water will be the topic of choice during Tuesday night's meeting of the Big Spring City Council, as the group is expected to discuss ways to keep up with recent decreases in water deliveries by the Colorado River Municipal Water District.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
â¢ JOSHUA DAVID HARRINGTON, 21, of 1316 Park Ave., was arrested Saturday on a charge of public intoxication.
â¢ OTIS JAMES PORTER, 28, of 2510 Hunter, was arrested Saturday on charges of criminal trespass of a habitation/shelter, criminal mischief, driving while license invalid, failure to maintain financial responsibility, expired motor vehicle inspection certificate and failure to appear (three counts).
BOSSIER CITY, La. â Funeral services for Big Spring native SSgt. Michael Jonathan Garcia will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at St. John Berchman Cathedral in Shreveport, La., with the Rev. Carson LaCaze officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at Boone Funeral Home in Bossier City, La. Michael was born to David Garcia and Mary Ann Garcia on Aug. 1, 1983, in Big Spring, Texas. He was killed in action on July 4, 2011, in Afghanistan.
SAN ANGELO â Lois May Peters, 94, of San Angelo died Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at a local nursing home. A private family service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Robert Massie Funeral Home.
It's a profession he stumbled into, but one he has come to enjoy.
Clipper Strickland, the new optometrist at The Eye Associates, was attending McMurry University when he just happened to go into optometry. After receiving his bachelor of science degree at McMurry, he continued his education at the Univeristy of Houston College of Optometry.
âThere's really no profound story on how I came to be in this profession,â Strickland said. âI just happened to stumble into it and I have enjoyed it ever since.â
It's not a surprise local firefighters have been busy this year.
Due to all the grassfires, especially the most recent Boykin Road Fire and South Mountain Fire, the Howard County Volunteer Fire Department, surrounding county volunteer fire departments, Big Spring Fire Department and Texas Forest Service have been putting in long hours to ensure the safety of Crossroads residents.
In honor of all their hard work, numerous people and organizations have joined together to put on a Firemen Benefit, Auction and Dance.
