Howard College celebrates 65th anniversary

Sixty-five years down, who knows how many to go.
While hitting the age of 65 might seem like the beginning of retirement life to many, it was treated as anything but that during ceremonies marking the anniversary of the first day of classes at Howard College.
College officials proudly showed off newly refurbished buildings — thanks to a $21 million bond project approved by district voters in 2007 — and expressed great confidence in the institution's future.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• CALEB BROWNING LYLE, 17, of 701 Settles St., was arrested Friday on a charge of possession of marijuana less than or equal to two ounces.
• CASEY RAY BRACKET, 19, of1425 E. Sixth St. 28, was arrested Friday on a charge of possession of marijuana less than or equal to two ounces.

Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Grant Burrow

Rachel Louise Cox and Matthew Grant Burrow both of Big Spring, exchanged vows Aug. 12, 2011, at 7:30 p.m. The ceremony took place at The Hardware Store, downtown Big Spring with a reception following at the same location.

Former council members file suit

A lawsuit has been filed against two city council members and a pair of local businesses in connection with an ongoing investigation into possible illegal campaign contributions.

Former City Councilwoman Joann Staulcup confirmed today that she and ex councilwoman Stephanie Horton were filing suit against current councilmen Marcus Fernandez and Glenn Carrigan, charging them with accepting illegal campaign contributions. Also named as defendants are local corporations Quad A Inc. and Hydro Dynamics, the firms that allegedly made the contributions.

Big Spring relief route gets $63.7M

The Big Spring truck reliever route is another step closer to reality as the Texas Transportation Commission on Thursday approved $63.7 million for the long-anticipated project.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• RICHARD ALCANTAR MARTINEZ, 51, was arrested Thursday on warrants for dog or cat running at large, failure to appear and disregard red light.
• ASSAULT was reported in the 1400 block of Sycamore Street.
• BURGLARY OF A VEHICLE was reported in the 800 block of W. FM 700.
• THEFT was reported in the 400 block of E. Fourth Street.

Carl Bradley, 85, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Robertson and the Rev. Bill Ivins officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, at the funeral home.

He was born Feb. 25, 1926, in Hughes Springs, Texas, and married Joyce Howard on June 20, 1959.

Calvin C. Gaston

Calvin C. Gaston, 70, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, at the funeral home.

He was born Sept. 7, 1941, in Blackwell, Texas. Calvin was a pumper for Whiting Oil and Gas.

LeAnn Campbell Pesek, 35, of Cedar Park, formerly of Big Spring, died Monday, Sept. 26, 2011. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Trinity Baptist Church with burial at Trinity Memorial Park.

Clayton W. Bettle, 91, of Big Spring, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2011 in a Temple hospital. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
