Flores birth

August 5, 2011

Nathaniel Hector Castaneda Flores, son of Emily Luz Flores and Hector Ruben Castaneda, both of Big Spring, was born July 29, 2011.
He arrived at 5:35 p.m. weighing six pounds 12.6 ounces and measured 18 ½ inches.
His maternal grandfather is Oscar Flores and great-grandmother is Gregoria Flores, both of Big Spring. His paternal grandmother is Frances Enriquez of Big Spring.
He was welcomed home by his sibling, Jasiah.

Davis-Haney wedding

Erin Michelle Davis and Paul Robert Haney exchanged marriage vows in a double ring ceremony on the beach at the Iberostar Maya in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, on Monday, June 6, 2011, at 4 o’clock in the afternoon.
Erin is the daughter of Jay and Mona Davis of De Soto. She is the granddaughter of the late Harry and Mary Jean Nugent of Lake Charles, La, and the late John Davis of Las Vegas, Nev., and Vera Thomas of Gold Beach, Ore.

Hang gliding competition returning to Big Spring

McMahon-Wrinkle Airpark will again be host for the United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding National competition, scheduled this year for Aug. 14-21.

“It's unusual to have these competitions in the same place so it really is a big deal that Big Spring keeps having them,” said Terry Wofford, event coordinator. “This is a good way to get our town name out there past the perimeter of Texas.”

Student registration set for BSISD

Ready or not, here it comes.

A new school years begins Aug. 22 and Big Spring Independent School District officials have announced dates and times for student registrations, schedule pick-ups and orientations.

All elementary campuses (grades kindergarten through 4) will hold orientations and “meet the teacher” events Aug. 18. The times for each campus are:

• Bauer — 5:30 p.m.
• Kentwood — 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
• Marcy — 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
• Moss — 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. (students will attend classes this school year at the Goliad Intermediate campus)

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• ANTHONY JOSEPH AZUL, 27, of 1516 Sycamore, was arrested Wednesday on warrants for driving without safety belt secured, failure to appear (three counts), operating a motor vehicle with the wrong registration and no driver's license – when unlicensed.
• CHELSEA LEE HOLMES, 28, of 2611 Fairchild, was arrested Wednesday on charges of theft – shoplifting, no safety belt – child less than 17 years of age (three counts) and driving while license invalid.

Kenneth W. Heflin, 84, of Big Spring died Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veterans Home. Memorial services with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, at Forsan Baptist Church with Bro. Michael Robinson and Bro. Derrick Looney officiating.

John 'Tippy' Anderson Jr.

August 4, 2011

John "Tippy" Anderson Jr., 84, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011, in a local nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Mark Lindsey, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

Heat changes football practices

With this summer's unusually hot conditions, the coaching staff at Big Spring have instituted some changes when it comes to football practices. Two-a-days still started Aug. 1, as they did across the state and most of the nation, but a concentrated effort is being made to keep the players hydrated and ensure their safety.

“We have scheduled water breaks throughout our practices,” Head Coach Phillip Ritchey said. “In addition, the boys are encouraged to go get water any time they need it. We don't want them wasting time asking. We want them to just go get it.”
