Weather to remain cold for now

January 2, 2015

The sun will come out, but not tomorrow.

According to the National Weather Service in Midland, residents may start to see some relief from the freezing rain and slick streets by mid-Saturday but near freezing weather is still expected to stick around for several days.

Ice storm leaves frigid temps, hazardous roads in its wake

Baby, it’s cold outside — and don’t expect it to get any better for New Year’s Day.

According to the National Weather Service in Midland, the Crossroads area should see decreasing precipitation throughout the day with light, freezing raining and snow flurries. The temperature mostly likely will not rise above, or even reach, 25 degrees, so the chance of ice melting seems to be minimal.

What to do with your Christmas tree

Now that the last light is taken off and the last childhood ornament packed away, the question occurs of what to do with the mighty, barren green left in the middle of the living room.

On Tuesday, the city of Big Spring began accepting living Christmas trees at the landfill free of charge and will continue for one week only, through Tuesday, Jan. 6. No other trash will be accepted with the tree, a press release from the city states.

Weather forces MISD officals to cancel Sandhills title game

Mother Nature finally found a way to do something no other team at the Sandhills Invitational Basketball Tournament couldn’t. She cooled off the Big Spring High School Steers.
Literally.
Due to the arrival of a severe winter storm, officials within the Monahans Independent School District decided on Tuesday to cancel the tournament’s championship game due to declining road conditions that would have required both Big Spring and Levelland to travel on icy roads.

Texas Longhorns football coach Charlie Strong had some strong words following his team’s 31-7 loss to Arkansas in the Texas Bowl.

Gas prices continue to fall

Average retail gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 9.2 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.05 a gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 13,114 gas outlets in Texas.

This compares with the national average that has fallen 9.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.28 a gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

City, county offices to close New Year's Day

December 30, 2014

In honor of New Years Day, city and county offices will be closed only on Thursday. City sanitation crews will also receive a one day holiday as there will be no trash pick up Thursday. County and city law enforcement as well as city emergency services will continue to work through the holiday.

As for area public student, Tuesday will mark the return of classes for the Big Spring, Coahoma and Forsan public schools. Teachers head back to work on Monday for a day of inservice.

Big Spring opens Sandhills tournament with 2-0 charge

The Big Spring High School kicked off their appearance in the 2014 Sandhills Invitational Basketball Tournament on a high note on Monday by pounding out a pair of key wins in pool play in the Jerry Larned Sports Complex in Monahans.
With the two wins, the Steers moved to within a pair of wins today from advancing to the tournament championship game on Saturday. Big Spring is scheduled to face Presidio and the Monahans JV today in the final day of Pool B play.

H-E-B issues recall

SAN ANTONIO — H-E-B has issued a “voluntary and precautionary recall” for H-E-B bulk cryovac and tray packed Chorizo and H-E-B cryovac Pork Al Pastor due to undeclared peanut allergens in seasoning provided by Adams Food Flavors and Ingredients.

There have been no reported illnesses related to this precautionary recall, H-E-B officials said, but people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

Police investigating 7-Eleven robbery

Big Spring police are searching for a man they believe responsible for robbing a local 7-Eleven convenience store Saturday night.

Officers responded to a robbery call at the 7-Eleven store on 300 Owens around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, according to information released by the Big Spring Police Department.

“On arrival, officers met with the clerk, who advised that he was working in the soft drink area when he heard the business door open,” the release stated. “He was approached by a black male subject who grabbed him and put a knife to his stomach and demanded money from the register.”
