Big Spring rallies for 58-56 victory over Kerrvile Tivy

SAN ANGELO – The Big Spring High School Steers made sure the large crowd on hand at San Angelo Stadium got their money’s worth on Saturday evening.
And then some.
Matt Yanez, on the final play of the Steers’ season opener, outleaped a crowd of defenders in the end and snagged a 41-yard “Hail Mary” pass from Tobyn Tannehill and then alertly pitched the ball to teammate Hunter Hill, who finished off a wild come-from-behind victory over Kerrville Tivy by cradling the game-winning touchdown while falling to the ground.

Applications sought for new EDC directors

The city of Big Spring wants you — for the Economic Development Corp. Board of Directors, that is.

Less than 48 hours after the city council ousted the EDC board, city officials were already getting the word out in a hunt for replacement directors. And the clock is ticking — replacements need to be in place by the end of September.

‘Across Worlds’ presentation kicks off HC Speaker Series

Howard College will kick off the year with its first Foundation Speaker Series “Across Worlds — A Tale of Two Lives of Adventure.”

The presentation is by Jeff Salz and Alepho Deng and will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Hall Center for the Arts on the campus of Howard College. The Howard County Foundation Speaker Series is co-sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank.

Paul F. Soldan Jr.

Paul F. Soldan Jr., 66, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, at his residence. He was born Feb. 24, 1948, in Big Spring, Texas, to Paul F. Soldan and Wauneta Allsman. He served in the U.S. Army and worked for Fina Refinery.

He is survived by two children, Louis Soldan and wife Melissa of Georgetown and Cori McKinzie and husband Justin of Big Spring; sisters, Kathleen Tedesco and husband Mike of Grand Prairie and Christine Boling and husband Don of Big Spring; as well as eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Xiomaris I'Lyana Sanchez

Xiomaris I'Lyana Sanchez, infant daughter of Octavio and Isabel Calderon Sanchez of Big Spring, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014 in a Clifton, Texas hospital. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.

In addition to her parents, Xiomaris is survived by a sister, Jossie Villareal; two brothers, Cristian Villareal and Jiovany Sanchez; paternal grandparents, Apolonio and Gregoria Sanchez; maternal grandfather, Librado Calderon; and god-parents, Vicente and Tayna Calderon.

United Way prepares for kick off

The United Way of Big Spring and Howard County is gearing up for the 70th annual Boots & Bling campaign kick off which will be taking place at 6 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Big Spring Country Club.

“We finished last year’s campaign strong and we are ready to jump into the 2015 campaign just as strong,” said Larry Rodgers, United Way of Big Spring and Howard County president. “Big Spring and Howard County have always offered us great support during the campaign and we have no doubt this year will be the same.”

BSISD board approves 5 percent raise

Employees with the Big Spring Independent School district will have a little extra cash in their paycheck this year.

The board of trustees voted Thursday night to approve a budget that includes a 3 percent raise for all employees plus 2 percent more for teachers and non-contractual, at-will staff.

Maria R. Gutierrez, 92, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away on Wednesday Aug. 27, 2014, in Lubbock. Vigil service will be 7 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Msgr. Bernard L. Gully officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Mrs. Maria Gutierrez was born on July 19, 1922 in Marfa, Texas to Maria Lazars Brito and Luis Rosales. She married Jose Gutierrez in 1940 in Big Spring. She was a housewife and mother. She was also a Guadelupanas and a Crusillista.

Leadership Big Spring deadline extended

Although the formal deadline to register for this fall’s Leadership Big Spring has passed, officials will still accept applications for a few more days.

As of this morning, 12 people have signed up for LBS, a nine-month class (the group meets once a month) that gives applicants a better understanding of the inner workings of this community.

Applications will be accepted until Sept. 8. Cost is $400 for chamber members and $600 for non-members.
