Leadership Big Spring applications accepted

Applications for Leadership Big Spring 2011-2012, hosted by Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce, are being accepted until July 29.
The class focuses on introducing members of the community to the inner workings of Big Spring. It is a 10-month course designed to show new and old residents alike the different aspects of the community and direct them to the different ways of getting involved in the community.

Boots and Bling: United Way kickoff set

It's time to unite, Howard County.
It's time to come together for the United Way of Big Spring and Howard County's 67th Annual Campaign Kick-off Boots and Bling.
The event will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Big Spring Country Club. Throughout the evening there will be a silent auction, live music from Freeride, hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. Tickets are $25.

More measures enacted to help city deal with decreased water deliveries

In a continued effort to meet the 20 percent reduction in water deliveries, the city of Big Spring announced Friday it has implemented additional restrictions on water use.

The Big Spring City Council gave the go-ahead for additional restrictions Tuesday on the heels of a presentation by John Grant, general manager of the Colorado River Municipal Water District, who explained water levels in local reservoirs have reached critically low levels with no real relief in sight.

BSISD sets new student registration

arents of students new to Big Spring Independent School District can register their children July 27 and 28 at the high school library.

Registration times will be 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. July 27 and 7 a.m.-1 p.m. July 28.

The registration is for students enrolling in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes, as well as any student between the ages of 5 and 21 who resides within the district but was not enrolled in BSISD on May 27, said Vickie Cheyne, PEIMS Coordinator for the district.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity:
• MARIO ILDEFONSO SALAZAR, 21, 1503 Wood, was arrested on a charge of public intoxication.
• CHRISTOPHER RYAN COLEGROVE, 19, 1425 E. Sixth No. 26, was arrested on a charge of theft from the elderly and two other-agency warrants.
• JAMES BRIAN FIVEASH, 54, San Angelo, was arrested on a charge of public intoxication.
• FRANKIE WADE ORTEGA, 23, Beaumont, was arrested on charges of failure to identify/false or fictitious information and resisting arrest, search or transportation.

Nancy Jean Raymond Jones, age 61, of Big Spring, died and went to be with the Lord and Savior Wednesday, July 13, 2011, in Midland, Texas. The family will receive friends Monday, July 18, 2011, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Rev. Doug Shelley, pastor of Eastside Baptist Church, officiating.

Clay Lease fire still burning; 80 percent contained

Firefighters are gradually gaining the upper hand against a fire that has consumed more than 5,000 acres in eastern Howard County, but the blaze is expected to continue through the weekend.

Meanwhile, fires consumed two abandoned structures but caused no injuries in Big Spring late Thursday and early today.

United Way getting new director

July 15, 2011

United Way of Big Spring and Howard County is saying goodbye to Jeanie Coor, executive director for the past two years, and welcoming Sandy Stewart as the its new director.

“The United Way is a great organization and I regret having to leave, but I know it is being turned over to good hands,” said Coor.

The transition comes due to a family move for Coor, but she will continue to help Stewart throughout the Boots and Bling 2012 campaign kickoff. No final date has been set for Coor yet, but Stewart is already taking on tasks.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• JEAN JAVIER MATA, 17, of 2522 Gunter, was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
• WILLIAM COLE LAFON, 66, transient, was arrested Thursday on a charge of disorderly conduct – exposing genital/anus in public.
• SEAN PARKER BAXTER, 19, of 3509 E. Interstate Highway 20 14A, was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
• GAUDY LYNN COX, 47, of Weatherford, was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
