James Bannister "Bill" Allgood, 88, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Barstow, Texas, with burial to follow in Barstow Cemetery.

Law enforcement administrative services may be centered at county jail

The Howard County Jail could soon be the center of law enforcement efforts in Big Spring, as city and county officials prepare to meet to mull over the idea of housing the Sheriff's Office and Police Department in the same facility.

City Manager Gary Fuqua informed the Big Spring City Council Tuesday night recent talks between the city and county administrations could help the municipality solve a longstanding problem.

Over the top: United Way exceeds its $250,000 goal

The United Way of Big Spring and Howard County did a victory lap during its annual business meeting Tuesday evening.

Despite a struggling economy — and bucking the trend of the past few years — the 2010 UW drive exceeded its goal of $250,000, which left both campaign officials and the agencies that receive funds from the organization in a celebratory mood.

Wayland Pierce, first vice president of the 2010 campaign, said $252,000 has been raised to date, with the promise of even more to come within the next few months.

Friends 'turned loose' to raise funds

The Friends of the State Park are about “to be turned loose” to officially raise funds for a new nature center at the park.

For more than a year, the group has been advocating the construction of a combination nature/visitor center at the state park, an addition they believe would draw more visitors to this area.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• KRYSTAL MARIE SERVANTES, 22, of 1503 Lexington, was arrested Tuesday on warrants for no driver's license when unlicensed, failure to appear, failure to provide a safety deat system for a child and a warrant from another agency.
• CLARA RAMIREZ RANGEL, 36, of 1902 S. Johnson, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of driving while license invalid/suspended with a previous conviction.

Dunn case: Memphis lead invalid

COLORADO CITY — Investigators working on the disappearance of 13-year-old Hailey Darlene Dunn confirmed an recent out-of-state lead in the case was invalid, as the search for the girl continues into its fourth week.

According to Pete Kampfer, city manager and media liaison for the search, investigators were looking into a possible lead in the case in Memphis, Tenn. However, Kampfer confirmed this week the lead was determined to be invalid.
