Larry Dean Lasater, 72, of Midland, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, in a local hospital. Funeral services for Larry Dean and his son, Joe Dean Lasater who also died Saturday, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Chapel in Midland with the Rev. Herbert Crisp officiating.
Rodrigo â€śReyâ€ť Reyes, 71, of Big Spring, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, at his residence. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
West Texas Centers and Howard College are offering Mental Health First Aid Sept. 7 and 8 to people who are interested in knowing how to respond to people with mental health issues.
The two-day class will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Howard College Tumbleweed Room. The class costs $100. To register, contact the Howard College Registrarâ€™s Office at 432-264-5106

As the fiscal dust surrounding the 82nd Texas Legislative Session settles, it appears the Big Spring State Park has avoided the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's budgetary axe, saved by an inter-local agreement between Howard County and the city of Big Spring.
Both local governments have agreed to chip in $10,000 each â€” to be paid the TPWD â€” to help fund the continued operation of the Big Spring State Park.
For years, hang glider pilots have raved about the hospitality they find in Big Spring. Saturday night, they displayed some generosity of their own.
On the eve of the U.S. Hang Gliding Association National Championship, The Cloudbase Foundation, a charitable group financed through hang glider pilot donations, gave away $6,000 to three local organizations which specialize in helping children.

Joel Diaz Lopez, 63, of Big Spring died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Chapel with the Rev. Reynaldo Bennett, pastor of Light House Restoration Center, officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.
Lyndon Gene Priest, 74, of Big Spring went home to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday morning, Aug. 14, 2011. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at College Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken McMeans officiating. Graveside services with military honors will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Sweetwater Cemetery.
Howard College trustees Friday approved a plan to supplement the college's water usage by drilling several water wells on campus.
The action, which was taken during a special meeting of trustees Friday, means college officials will spend up to $125,000 in the coming months drilling, casing and completing six water well at various spots on the Birdwell Lane campus.
The college, along with everyone else in West Texas, has bee looking for ways to best deal with a prolonged drought that has resulted in water deliveries being cut by 20 percent in recent months.
