Big Spring Independent School District was hammered in the latest round of school accountability ratings released by the Texas Education Agency Friday.
BSISD received a district-wide rating of â€śAcademically Unacceptable,â€ť the lowest of four possible TEA ratings. In addition, all but one local campusâ€™ academic performance was rated as unacceptable by the state education agency. Moss Elementary received a â€śAcademically Acceptableâ€ť rating from TEA.
Templo Belen celebrated the graduation of seven pupils from Vision Int'l University on Sunday, July 24.
Vision International University has their main campus in California and originated back in 1977. There is also a campus located in Dallas and now has a Resource Center in Big Spring.
For the past three years, Templo Belen has been hosting classes for Vision International University and the School of Tyrannus Int'l Discipleship Program, founded by Dr. Bemis â€”founder of of For God's Glory Ministries.
Major Darryl G. Hammonds, son of Frank and Joann Brooks of Big Spring, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal in February and received the award in April.
Hammonds has been a Big Spring resident since the age of 9 and has been stationed at Quantico, Virg. for the past year and a half. He entered into the United States Marine Corp Feb. 13, 1990 and has served four combat tours in Kuwait, Iraq, Somalia and Afghanistan, which earned him the Bronze Star.
Christina Leann Helsley of Big Spring and Jonathon Kurtis Lennon of Muleshoe exchanged wedding vows June 11, 2011 at a 2 p.m. ceremony at Spring Creek Fellowship in Big Spring.
Tina is the daughter of Bruce and Beccie Helsley of Big Spring. She is the granddaughter of the late Gene and Anne Helms of Big Spring and the late George and Leona Helsley of Inwood, W.V.
Jon is the son of Jack and Jayna Lennon of Mulshoe. He is the grandson of John and Carolyn Harris of Muleshoe.
The ceremony was officiated by the Rev. Dennis Teeters.
Amber Rowland of Fort Collins, Colo. and Israel Hernandez of Big Spring, announce their engagement.
She is the daughter of A.J. and Linda Rowland of Fort Collins, Colo..
He is the son of Eriberto and Sylvia Hernandez of Big Spring.
The couple will exchange vows Nov. 11, 2011 at Club Tico in Fort Collins, Colo.
Christmas may be a few months away still, but preparations for the 2011 Comanche Trail Festival of Lights are already glowing brightly.
“I think this will be the most spectacular presentation yet for our visitors,” said Pat Simmons, Festival of Lights founder. This year will bring back the poinsettias to Scenic Mountain.
According to Simmons, three years ago three poinsettias adorned the side of the mountain, but due to lack of power supply were taken down and haven't been included the past few years.
Texas parents with children getting ready to head back to class in a few weeks have most likely faced plenty of challenges this summer, and, from a fiscal standpoint, paying for school supplies and clothing may be one of the toughest.
However, the state of Texas is hoping to ease the burden Aug. 19-21 with its annual Tax Free Holiday, a three-day opportunity for parents and guardians to skip the sales taxes on many of the back-to-school items they purchase each year.

â€˘ ASSAULT was reported in the 1700 block of S. Lancaster.
â€˘ THEFT was reported in the 2600 block of Carol Dr.
â€˘ BURGLARY OF A HABITATION was reported in the 1100 block of Runnels St.
Belia Diaz Landin, 80, of Big Spring went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 28, 2011, at her residence. A vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2011, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2011, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Monsignor Bernard Gully officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.
Heather Justice Templin of Big Spring and Jason Wayne Keesee of Ballinger announce their engagement.
She is the daughter of Cheryl Justice and the late Ernie Justice of Big Spring. She is employed at the VA Medical Center.
He is the son of Marty and Sam Keesee. He is employed by S&S Construction.
The couple plans to exchange wedding vows Sept. 24, 2011 at The Courtyard in downtown Big Spring.
