Geraldine Lewis

June 26, 2014

Geraldine Lewis, 95, of Midland, formerly of Big Spring, died Wednesday, June 25, 2014, in a Midland nursing home. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2014, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring with the Rev. Bob Porterfield officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 26, 2014, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home in Big Spring.

Geraldine was born Jan. 29, 1919, in Annona, Texas and married Alton Lewis Feb. 22, 1936 in Ackerly, Texas. He preceded her in death Feb. 6, 1983.

Daryle Ed Coates

Daryle Ed Coates, 60, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, June 25, 2014, in a Stanton hospital. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 28, 2014, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

He was born Sept. 20, 1953 in Big Spring, Texas. He was a lifelong resident of Big Spring and Howard County and graduated from Coahoma High School in 1972. His passion was cooking and serving the Wounded Warriors.

Council members ponder ‘wish lists’ for fiscal year

Big Spring City Council members shared their wish lists for the upcoming budget cycle Tuesday and, not surprisingly, infrastructure improvements were at or near the top of everybody’s agendas.

Toward the end of their Tuesday meeting, council members were granted the opportunity to discuss their budget priorities for the coming fiscal year and they talked about a wide variety of subjects, including beautification, traffic safety and improving the quality of life for local residents.

Lawsuit puts roadwork on hold for now

Plans to use state money to help upgrade Howard County roads are proceeding, albeit at a much slower pace than officials anticipated.

The county is eligible for almost $4 million in grant money from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for use in rehabilitating roads adversely effected by heavy oilfield traffic.

Annie Pearl Cook

Annie Pearl Cook of Big Spring, died Sunday, June 22, 2014, in a Big Spring hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2014, at the First Christian Church in Big Spring with Monsignor Bernard Gully and the Rev. Ken McIntosh officiating. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Mt. Evergreen Cemetery in Pecos.

Annie was born Feb. 26, 1934 in Ballinger, Texas and married Marion Cook in Pecos in 1952. He preceded her in death Dec. 13, 2003.

Jo Ann Grace

June 25, 2014

Jo Ann Grace, 62, of San Angelo, passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at her residence.

Mrs. Grace was born Oct. 25, 1951, in Duncan, Okla.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Gutierrez Funeral Chapels/Knickerbocker. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Wind farm major topic for HC board

June 24, 2014

Representatives for Invenergy LLC. met with the Howard College board of trustees Monday to discuss the company’s new wind energy project and touched on the possibility of requesting a tax abatement.

“They have not made a proposal (for tax abatement) at this time,” said Dr. Cheryl Sparks, Howard College president. “They were in town and wanted to tell us about the project.”

Corvettes make Big Spring stop

A long line of Corvettes graced the north face of the Hotel Settles early today.

Lone Star Corvette Club members, out of Dallas /Fort Worth, made the Hotel Settles one of their stops on a five-day tour of Texas’ historic hotels.

T. Jean Fannin McGuire

T. Jean Fannin McGuire, of Scottsdale, Ariz,, and Plymouth, Minn, dedicated mom, remarkable homemaker and former journalist, died Saturday, June 21, 2014, in her Plymouth apartment.

Jean was born in Big Spring, Texas, in 1947 to E.L.Fannin and Thelma Lee Fannin.

She graduated from Big Spring High School in 1965, attended Howard County Junior College and graduated in journalism from Texas Tech University in 1969. She was exceedingly proud of her junior college background.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2014, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel in Big Spring with the Rev. Bernard Gully and the Rev. Ken McIntosh officiating. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Mt. Evergreen Cemetery in Pecos.

A vigil service will be held Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.
