American pickers duo heads to West Texas

You could have a gold mine sitting out in your garage.
Mike Wolfe, Frank Fritz, and their crew from the History Channel’s American Pickers are headed to West Texas to pick through any valuables and not so valuables. The documentary series that explores the fascinating world of antique ‘picking.'

Welcome home program for Vietnam vets set for American Legion post

Big Spring’s American Legion Post 506 in conjunction with West Texas VA Health Care System cordially invites all Vietnam veterans to a Welcome Home Vietnam Veteran’s program and dinner.

The program will begin at 6 p.m. Friday at the American Legion Post, 3203 W. Highway 80, Big Spring.

A RSVP is welcomed but not required. Please contact the Office of Community Relations at the West Texas VA Health Care System, 432-264-4824.

KBSB plans city-wide cleaning effort for April 11

The time for Spring cleaning is right around the corner, and Big Spring is no exception.

This year’s Big Spring city clean-up will take place April 11.

“I know that the 11th is going to be a busy day with all of the events taking place, but Keep Texas Beautiful is who selects the date.” said Lisa Brooks, president of Keep Big Spring Beautiful. “We are hoping that the businesses, organizations, and people who participated last year will be back out there helping again.”

Easter egg hunts on tap this weekend

Egg hunters: On your mark, get set ...

The Easter Bunny will be busy this weekend, as a pair of large-scale egg hunts are scheduled in Big Spring.
On Saturday from 1:30 p.m. until 4 p.m., the Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veterans home will its its annual community-wide Easter egg hunt.

“There will be hot dogs cooked by David Ortiz and Adrian Viera, and live music.” said Michelle Rodriguez, activities director.

Hoops, Goals and Dreams Friday

March Madness is coming to Big Spring Friday.

Teams from across West Texas will compete in the 11th Annual Hoops, Dreams and Goals Basketball Tournament at Howard College’s Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.

“The country may have March Madness that they love and embrace, but at West Texas Centers, we have our own version of March Madness, and that’s ‘Hoops, Dreams and Goals,’” West Texas Centers CEO Shelley Smith said

BSHS thespians ready for UIL district one-act play contest

They’re ready to take the stage.

The Big Spring High School Theater Production class will compete Saturday at Snyder High School for the University Interscholastic League District One Act Play competition.

The six schools competing are Big Spring, Lamesa, Levelland, Snyder, Sweetwater and Lubbock Estacado.

Teacher confesses to improper relationship

March 25, 2015

According to Big Spring Police, a 22-year-old substitute teacher with Big Spring ISD confessed to having an improper relationship with a student.
On Wednesday, March 18, Big Spring police officers responded to a call in reference to a possible improper relationship between an educator and student. According to a news release from the Lt. Brian Gordon. Big Spring detectives began an investigation after being notified of a possible incident.

Vaping ban passes

After heated discussion, ordinance OKed, 5-2

A second reading of an amended ordinance including electronic vaping devices (also known as electronic cigarettes) in the city of Big Spring’s current anti-smoking laws produced plenty of heated discussion but eventually passed city council muster Tuesday night.
By a 5-to-2 vote (only Justin Myers and Marvin Boyd opposed the measure), the council approved the amended ordinance, which should take effect within the next few weeks.

Germanwings Flight 9525 Crashes in French Alps With 150 People Onboard

March 24, 2015

An Airbus with 150 people onboard crashed in the southern French Alps on Tuesday, officials said. The A320, operated by Lufthansa’s budget airline Germanwings, was flying from Barcelona to Dusseldorf and went down in the Digne region of the Alps-De-Haute Province, according to Reuters. There were 144 passengers, two pilots and four crew members, Germanwings said. "We are sorry to confirm that flight 4U9525 is an accident," the airline said on Twitter.

Police arrest substitute teacher

A 22-year-old substitute teacher for Big Spring ISD was arrested Monday on a charge of improper relationship — educator and student.

According to George Bancroft, Big Spring ISD public relations coordinator, Tevian Deantra Parnell was only recently hired as a substitute teacher for the school system.
