City purchases property for new landfill

It’s still a few years and several million dollars away from reality, but at least Big Spring residents know where their next trash dump is going to be located.

Tuesday, The Big Spring City Council approved the purchase of 300 acres northeast of town to serve as as the new landfill once the old one reaches capacity sometime in the next five years.

Museum in dire need of funding boost

Faced with a severe shortfall caused by the loss of grant money, the museum is embarking on a membership drive to help keep the facility afloat.

Christi McCutchan Fox

Christi McCutchan Fox, 47, of Big Spring, died Monday April 7, 2014, at her residence. She will lie in state from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Christi was born in Big Spring on Oct. 12, 1966, to Judy and Richard McCutchan. She grew up in Big Spring but spent most of her adult life in Pennsylvania before returning to Big Spring in 2010. She received two bachelor’s degrees in geology and geography. While in Pennsylvania, she had worked for Pfizer and Armstrong.

David W. Dunckel

David W. Dunckel, 74, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014, in a Midland hospital. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2014, at St. Paul Lutheran Church with the Rev. Don Rosentreter officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

He was born Aug. 27, 1939, in Battle Creek, Mich. and married Irma Gobrogge April 29, 1961, in Pinconning, Mich.

Thomas 'Tommy' Hembree,

April 9, 2014

Thomas 'Tommy' Hembree, 54, of Big Spring, died Monday April 7, 2014, at his residence. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Chapel with the Rev. Derrick Looney, Spring Creek Fellowship, officiating. Burial will be at Clarendon Hills Cemetery in Darin, Ill.

He was born Sept. 5, 1959, in Chicago. He had been a resident of Big Spring for the past 10 years. Most of his life was spent in Illinois. He worked as a machinist.

Raymond Stukel

April 9, 2014

Raymond Stukel, 85, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014, in a local hospital. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2014, at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Don Rosentreter officiating.

He was born March 21, 1929, in Kenosha, Wis. and married Rose Fiebrantz Oct. 29, 1956 in Milwaukee, Wis.
Raymond served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953, then served in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 to 1977, retiring from Webb Air Force Base as a Master Sergeant. He then worked for Adobe Oil Company for 15 years.

The Big Spring High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams will continue their bids for the District 4-3A track titles on Thursday at Blankenship Field when the final day of the event get under way. The district held its preliminary races on Monday.
