Council to consider removal of EDC board

August 25, 2014

A tug of war which has developed between the Big Spring City Council and the Economic Development Council Board of Directors may have reached its breaking point.

When the city council meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, it will consider the possible removal and replacement of EDC board members.

Gas prices continue downward slide

August 25, 2014

Average retail gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 2.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.24 a gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 13,114 gas outlets in Texas.

This compares with the national average that has fallen 1.3 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.43 per gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

David Green, 47, of San Antonio, formerly of Big Spring, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014 in a San Antonio hospital. Funeral services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home and Crematory.

SWCID set to kick off volleyball program

The SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf Lady Rattlers will write a new page in Howard County athletic history tomorrow night. They will bring collegiate volleyball action to the Crossroads. The Lady Rattlers will take to the SWCID Activity Center at 6 p.m. for their first-ever game.

Big Spring spikers make strong showing at Granbury tournament

The Big Spring High School Lady Steers did exactly what they wanted at the Granbury Classic on Saturday. They played volleyball. Unfortunately for the Lady Steers, the end result probably wasn’t what they had hoped for.

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas — Karla Denise Lepard passed away Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014. Funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church of Colleyville on Sunday at 3 p.m.. Visitation was Saturday from 5-7 p.m. at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home. Burial is Monday at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring, Texas, at 3 p.m.

James B. (Sonny) Hicks

James B. (Sonny) Hicks passed away Aug. 18, 2014, in the home of Jessie and Daniel Cavazos in Harlingen, Texas. James had battled poor health for months.
At James' request, there will be no formal service. His remains are to be cremated and released on the beaches of South Padre Island. James was born Oct. 4, 1930, in Big Spring, Texas, to Gladys and Jim Hicks. He was raised in Forsan, Texas, and upon graduation from Howard Payne College was ordained as a Baptist minister.

Rafael 'Ralph' Lopez III

Rafael “Ralph” Lopez III, 55, of Big Spring, died Wednesday Aug. 20, 2014, at his residence. Private family services will be a later date.
Ralph was born in Edinberg, Texas, to Olga and Rafael Lopez Feb. 12, 1959. He spent most of his life in Big Spring. He was a Catholic. He attended Big Spring schools. He had worked for the city of Big Spring, gins and, most recently, roofing.
