October 18th
Officials with the Howard County Tax Collector’s Office say 2011 property tax bills have been mailed out and area residents can expect to receive them in the next few days — if they haven’t already.
County Tax Collector Kathy Sayles said her office is currently contracting with a company that stuffs the envelopes and mails out the statements for the Tax Collector’s Office.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• MANUEL SOSA, 18, of 1905 Wasson Rd. Apt. 41, was arrested Monday on a charge of possession of marijuana – two ounces or less.
• MELVIN KEITH BROWNFIELD, 68, of 2107 Morrison Dr., was arrested Monday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
• XAVIAN FELIX YOUNG, 21, of 600 N.W. Eighth St., was arrested Monday on warrants for driving without safety belt secured and failure to maintain financial responsibility.
October 17th
A change of guard will take place when the Big Spring Economic Development Corporation holds its monthly meeting at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in the chamber of commerce board room.
“On top of our routine business, we will be installing two new members and go through the election of officers,” said Terry Wegman, BSEDC executive director. Incoming board members Scott MacKenzie, an officer at Americ an State Bank, and Jim DePauw, a CPA and Howard College professor, will be installed. Outgoing members Larry McLellan and Glenn Fillingim will be recognized and board elections will be held.

Family of the Year is a designation Baylor and Jamie Walker of Garden City never expected to receive, but they are honored, none the less.
The Walkers have been named the Samaritan Counseling Center of West Texas Family of the Year for this area.
“We can think of many other families in Howard and Glasscock counties that are much more deserving,” Jamie Walker said.
The Walkers have three children, Shawn, Lyndee and Mason. The family has been a part of the Garden City community for 12 years as well as members of First Presbyterian Church.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• ANDY LOPEZ, 36, of Garland, was arrested Sunday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
• JAMEY SCOTT JOHNSON, 48, transient, was arrested Sunday on charges of criminal trespass and resisting arrest, search or transportation.
• DANIEL VERA FLORES, 43, of 907 E. 15th St., was arrested Sunday on a warrant from another agency and a charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
• ASSAULT was reported in the 1400 block of S. Birdwell Lane.
October 15th
The Big Spring Police Department reported the followingactivity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• CARLOS RENE GARCIA, 33, of 600 S. Bell, was arrested Friday on warrants for failed to maintain financial responsibility and theft less than $50/shoplifting.
• JAMEY SCOTT JOHNSON, 48, transient, was arrested Friday on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
• SAMMY FERRELL, 50, of 509 N. Johnson St., was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication with three prior convictions.

To you or me, a block of wood is a block of wood — but to one of the Mustang Draw Woodcarver’s Club members, it’s a work of art waiting to happen.
The club will hold its annual Show and Sale beginning Monday at Dora Roberts Community Center. There, you can purchase almost any kind of artwork done in wood. And, if you have the hankering, you can learn a thing or two about the craft yourself.
As part of the annual exhibition, club members will hold classes from Monday to Thursday on various forms of woodcarving, ranging from beginner’s work to more advanced art.
Big Spring Independent School District officials apparently will not accept an unacceptable rating for their schools.
Student improvement plans for all campuses which received an “academically unacceptable” rating from the Texas Education Agency will highlight tonight’s meeting of the BSISD Board of Trustees, which begins at 5:15 p.m. in the high school board room.

• CHRISTOPHER BENNETT WOOTEN, 50, of 301 State St., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of burglary of a vehicle.
• BURGLARY OF HABITATION was reported in the 2500 block of Carol Drive.
• ASSAULT was reported in the 400 block of N. Gregg Street.
• THEFT was reported:
In the 1500 block of Wood Street.
In the 3600 block of W. Hwy 80.
In the 400 block of E. Fourth Street.
• CRIMINAL MISCHIEF was reported in the 1400 block of N. Hwy 87.
October 11th
Howard County commissioners gave their proposed precinct boundaries a thumbs up Monday morning, with the proposed redistricting design expected to be presented to the U.S. Justice Department for final approval.
The county was forced to make minor changes to its previous redistricting model due to lines shifted by the city of Big Spring during its most recent meeting on the matter, but the changes proved to be little problem for attorney Robert Bass, who is handling restricting duties for both entities.
