Empty Bowls fund raiser Thursday

November 16, 2011

Empty Bowls —Five Golden Bowls — is right around the corner, but there is still time to purchase a ticket.

Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First Christian Church — located at 911 Goliad — 150 people will have the opportunity to not only support the United Way of Big Spring and Howard County, but also to enjoy homemade soups and take home a one-of-a-kind bowl.

“This is a great way for the community to show their support for the United Way and at the same time it draws attention to a problem that exists all over the world,” executive director Sandy Stewart said.

And his impact continues …

Skipper Driver, a major supporter of the Howard County Fair and Relay for Life passed away earlier this year after a long fight with cancer, but by no means has he stopped making a contribution on the community he loved so much.

In honor of Driver, the Howard County Fair Board decided to donate $1 from every ticket sold at the 2011 fair to the local Relay For Life campaign. Tuesday afternoon, members of the fair board, along with Driver's wife Wanda, presented the $4,175 check to members of the Relay For Life committee.
