February 19th
The Big Spring High School Choir had quite a medal haul at the recent University Interscholastic League Solo and Ensemble Contest in San Angelo.
Thirty BSHS students earned Division I ratings (the highest possible) during the contest, which was held at Angelo State University Feb. 5.
BSHS Choir Director Anna Castaneda O'Brien said 28 of those students qualified to compete in the State UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest, which will be held at the University of Texas in Austin later this school year.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity Friday and early Saturday:
• DAVID ISAIAS MIRAMONTES, 22, El Paso, was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
• ROSA MARIA FLORES, 34, 1504 Lincoln, was arrested on a warrant for harassment.
• ANNA MAE WHITE, 23, 1107 S. Goliad, was arrested on warrants for speeding and failure to appear.
• ROBERT ALLEN WRIGHT, 48, 2621 Chanute, was arrested on a warrant from another agency.
February 18th
“Time Travels,” Big Spring Symphony's third concert of the 2010-2011 season, promises a varied and contrasting repertoire, according to music director and conductor Dr. Keith Graumann.
A part of the “Home is Where the Heart Is” series, “Time Travels” will open at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Big Spring High School Auditorium.
Last-minute details are falling into place, but the local Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club still needs help to pull off the upcoming Harlem Ambassadors benefit basketball game.
The Big Spring Fire Department has a shiny new weapon in it's arsenal of firefighting tools, adding a $100,000 brush truck to its fleet, compliments of the State Legislature.
According to BSFD spokesman Craig Ferguson, the truck — which is used to fight brush fires in areas fire engines are unable to reach — didn't cost the city of Big Spring a dime and represents a considerable step forward for the department.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• ROBERT RUBEN SANCHEZ, 46, of 1023 Stadium Avenue was arrested on a charge of public intoxication.
• PAUL WINSLOW ADAIR, 56, of 1549 SE 1000 in Andrews, was arrested on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with previous conviction.
• RANDALL SCOTT MARTIN, 31, of 1419 Tucson, was arrested on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with previous conviction.
February 17th
In an effort to make up for an anticipated budget shortfall, Big Spring public school officials are offering personnel a de facto early resignation bonus.
Any Big Spring Independent School District employee who announces his or her resignation prior to March 1 will receive a one-time payment of $1,000, BSISD Chief Financial Officer Sandra Waggoner said.
Mike Eggleston had lots of stories from his days as a Texas peace officer, but it took a nudge from his wife to put those stories on paper.
Eggleston, whose career in law enforcement included a stint with the Big Spring Police Department, was at the Heritage Museum Wednesday to sign copies of “Distorted Pillars,” a fictionalized account of some of the events in his career.
Written under his pen name, Mike McKee, the book follows the career of Mike Evans, who strikes out at anything he considers unethical, unfair or unpatriotic.
Mark your calendars, numerous events are coming up in the next two months. Upcoming events were the main focus of the Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce board's meeting Wednesday.

• RICKY BOB YANEZ, 25, of 1302 Sycamore, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant from another agency and a warrant for resisting arrest, search or transportation.
• ZACKARY BENNETT WATKINS, 25, of 908 Mountain Park, was arrested Wednesday on warrants for expired license plate and failure to appear.
• JACOB DANIEL PETROWSKI, 21, of 2803 Apache, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant from another agency.
