Tuesday's meeting of the Big Spring City Council features a rather routine agenda, as the government panel looks to give final approval to a resolution supporting House Joint Resolution 56, a bill currently being considered by the Texas Legislature that would outlaw certain mandates in the Lone Star State.
During its Feb. 22 meeting, the council approved first reading of the resolution, which calls for a constitutional amendment prohibiting unfunded and underâfunded mandates passed down from the state level to city and county governments.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
â¢ DANIEL MONTEZ VIERA SR., 23, of 1907 S. Main St., was arrested Saturday on a charge of public intoxication.
â¢ JUAN ARNULFO CARDONA, 25, of 109 Algerita, was arrested Saturday on charges of evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, driving while intoxicated â open container, no driver's license â when unlicensed and failure to appear (three counts).
â¢ AMANDA RENEE MCGREGOR, 22, of Lamesa, was arrested Saturday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
Area residents will turn their need for moisture over to God Thursday evening, as area clergy and lay pastors gather to hold a rally to pray for rain at First Baptist Church.
Tim Blackshear, former Big Spring mayor and rally organizer, said the prayer rally will be based around 2 Chronicles 7:14. “

â¢ WALKER WAGONER LITTLEJOHN, 17, Winston Salem, N.C., was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and runaway.
â¢ JANTE LAMAR CHEEVES, 30, Converse, was arrested on two warrants for manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance.
â¢ LEONARD SHANE SLATON, 45, 205 W. 15th, was arrested on a charge of theft over $1,500/less than $20,000.
â¢ DANIEL MONTEZ VIERA, 23, 1907 S. Main, was arrested on a charge of public intoxication.
COLORADO CITY — It's been more than two months since 13-year-old Hailey Darlene Dunn mysteriously disappeared from her home in Colorado City, and while searches for the girl continue throughout the West Texas region, investigators say there have been no new breaks in the case.
A Big Spring man was arrested Thursday in connection with an aggravated robbery reported Jan. 7, according to law enforcement officials.
Charlie Jake Turner Jr., 31, of 900 S. Aylesford, was arrested Thursday by officers with the Big Spring Police Department on a warrant for aggravated robbery.
According to Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer with the BSPD, Turner was arrested for the alleged robbery of the 7-Eleven store at 1209 E. 11th Place that was reported at approximately 3:54 a.m.
t's the club's only fund-raiser of the year but considering the Big Spring Prospector's Club Gem and Mineral Show is in its 42nd season, it must be a successful one.
“It enables us to pay the utilities, purchase new saw blades or grinding wheels, make repairs, things like that. The money we raise at the show keeps us going,” explains Barbara Carter, the club's vice president. “It's a lot of work, but it's worth it.”
The Big Spring VA Medical Center will host a town hall meeting Thursday to discuss upcoming changes planned for the hospital in the coming year.
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday in the outpatient lobby of the medical center, located at 300 Veterans Blvd.
Daniel Marsh, director of the West Texas VA Health Care System, said that WTVAHCS leadership will provide information regarding newly implemented programs, changes to existing programs and some future programs in the planning phase. Construction and staffing plans also will be shared.

â¢ CHARLIE JAKE TURNER, 31, of 900 S. Aylesford, was arrested Thursday on a warrant for aggravated robbery.
â¢ YESINIA GARZA PENA, 28, of 107 E. 25th St., was arrested Thursday on two warrants from another agency.
â¢ DONNIE RODRIGUEZ JR., 19, of 2005 S. Runnels, was arrested Thursday on a charge of evading arrest or detention with a previous conviction.
â¢ JOSE RODRIQUEZ, 46, of 1609 Harding, was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication.
