Astronaut coming to Big Spring

NASA’s most experienced astronaut is visiting Big Spring Independent School District and the public is invited.

Dr. Story Musgrave, the only astronaut to serve on all of the shuttles, will visit with students and give a public presentation about his time on missions in outer space. The public presentation will be at 7 p.m. May 17 in the Big Spring High School auditorium. A question and answer session will follow.

State hospital security officer gets a new kidney

Terry Watkins will tell you straight up that it’s his fault he needed a new kidney.

He didn’t take care of his diabetes or his hypertension.

That oversight forced a kidney shutdown, requiring years of dialysis and a kidney transplant.

The Big Spring State Hospital security officer spent two years on the waiting list, always apprehensive, always waiting, always hopeful.
“Each time the phone rang, you were just on edge,” he said. “You were a little excited.”

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• MELISSA GUADALUPE GOMEZ, 27, of 1700 N. FM 700, was arrested Saturday on a warrant from another agency and warrants for expired motor vehicle inspection certificate and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.
• SEAN CHASE CRAWFORD, 24, of Midland, was arrested Saturday on a warrant for theft of service.
• DAVID ADAM MARTINEZ, 26, of 1002 N. Main St. (apartment number not provided), was arrested Saturday on a charge of failure to display driver's license.
