An investigation into the alleged acceptance of illegal campaign contributions will go forward, the district attorney has confirmed, while the official in question — Mayor Tommy Duncan — said he will accept responsibility for making a mistake.
“I met with the Texas Rangers and requested they investigate this matter throughly as to the mayor and the corporations,” District Attorney Hardy Wilkerson said during a press conference Friday afternoon at the Howard County Courthouse.

Information was turned over to the Howard County Sheriff's Office and Texas Rangers Thursday afternoon alleging Big Spring Mayor Tommy Duncan accepted illegal campaign contributions during his bid for the municipal office in 2010.
Campaign finance records submitted by Duncan to the City Secretary's office covering periods between March 30 and April 28 of 2010 list a pair of contributions from Hydro Dynamics Inc. and Quad A Inc., allegedly violating Sections 253.003 and 253.094 of the state's election code.
Officials with the Big Spring Police Department say they are investigating an e-mail alleging a former Big Spring Independent School District principal engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a student several years ago.
Karen Saunders, who was a teacher with Big Spring ISD for a number of years before taking over as principal at Kentwood Elementary, has been placed on paid administrative leave by Snyder ISD, where she is the principal at Snyder Elementary, according to recent reports.
Were it said that Big Spring has something to bark about this weekend, well, someone might be hanging their head in shame. Certainly, there would be no tail-wagging over that bad pun.
What is happening, however, is an event in its 41st year — the Big Spring Kennel Club Dog Show. Once again it is being held at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum on the Howard College campus. Admission is free and the show, or shows — the event is actually two separate dog shows — begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. The coliseum doors will open at 8 a.m.

aldivar, school board members and students were able to witness the groundbreaking for one of four new elementary schools approved by voters.

Friday and Saturday, the Howard/Glasscock Relay For Life will once again take the track at Blankenship Field just east of Big Spring High School.
Teams and committee members will begin setting up campsites after school Friday afternoon.
Opening ceremonies are at 8 p.m., followed by the Survivors’ and Caregivers’ Lap and balloon release. Survivors are treated to a reception and given tickets for meals at the various food booths.

Election officials say early voting is off to a good start, with the proposed charter amendment to place term limits on Big Spring City Council members likely the driving force behind the totals.
According to Saundra Bloom, elections administrator for Howard County, 86 voters cast their ballots in this year’s municipal elections Monday, which — along with 22 mail-in ballots — brought the first day of early voting to a total of 108 ballots.
It’s not your typical performance, but it is no typical band.
The Big Spring High School Honor Band will be performing a noon concert at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church Thursday.
“We are performing this not only to get another quality recording from the band, but to allow people who normally wouldn’t be able to attend a nighttime concert hear the band perform,” explained Big Spring High School Band Director Rocky Harris.
For the sixth straight year, Howard County Master Gardeners will expand the offerings at its Annual Spring Plant Sale, to be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday in the Fellowship Hall of St Paul Lutheran Church, at 810 Gregg St.
In addition to the many flowering plants, the group is offering pots, potting soil and more.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• JUANITA CANALES RIOS, 44, of 905 E. 16th St., was arrested Tuesday on a charge of driving while license invalid and two warrants from another agency.
• SHANE EDDIE ANDERSON, 39, of 1200 E. Lloyd, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
