City Manager Gary Fuqua presented the Big Spring City Council with the proposed 2011-2012 budget during a work session Monday, and much like life in sweltering West Texas has been, it was a good news and bad news fiscal situation.
The proposed budget is based on a 94.95-cent per $100 valuation tax rate, a drop of 5 cents compared to last year's 99.95 cent rate.
Students and parents may like some of the changes Big Spring Independent School District Food Services has in store for the coming year.
But one major change won't make anyone happy.
When students return to classes Aug. 22, they'll notice some changes to the fare they're offered in the cafeterias. Meals will now feature more vegetables, fresh fruits and other additions designed to make the meals both nutritious and appealing.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
•ANTONIO PARADEZ FLORES, 49, of 1602 Sycamore, was arrested Monday on warrants for driving while license invalid and failure to appear.
•ROMERO VILLARREAL, JR., 26, of 1412 Wood St., was arrested Monday on a warrant from another agency.
•MARIO ROBERT OVALLE, 37, of 305 E. 19th St., was arrested Monday on a warrant for failure to maintain financial responsibility.
•THEFT was reported in the 900 block of Runnels Street.
