The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• LUIS ALEJANDRO RAMOS, 22, of 2911 W. Hwy 80 141, was arrested Friday on a charge of possession of marijuana less than or equal to two ounces.
• KODY CHANCE JACKSON, 25, of 3217 Fenn St., was arrested Friday on charges of possession of controlled substance less than one gram, expired motor vehicle inspection certificate, failure to appear (five counts), speeding, expired drivers license, driving while license invalid and failed to maintain financial responsibility.

BSISD superintendent vows district will shed unacceptable tag

No one likes being labeled “unacceptable,” and that applies to school districts as well as individuals.

Big Spring Independent School District has been saddled with an “academically unacceptable” rating ever since the Texas Education Agency school accountability ratings were released July 29. Thursday, school officials briefed trustees on how they intend to shed that label.

Still no takers for District 3 on BSISD board

The search for a new school trustee continues at Big Spring Independent School District.

Officials have been unsuccessful in their efforts to find a replacement for District 3 trustee Alan Partee, who declined to seek re-election in May.

District 3 covers an area which includes the Coronado Hills and Indian Hills subdivisions, as well as homes in the general vicinity of the VA Medical Center.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• TYRE COLE WATTS, 26, of 5101 Fisher, was arrested Thursday on charges of criminal mischief more than $50 and less than $500 and criminal trespass/habitation/shelter.
• CIERRA KASHA BUTLER, 25, of 1425 E. Sixth 19, was arrested Thursday on warrants for expired registration and failure to appear.
• CALVIN GEORGE BUTLER III, 24, of 1606 E. Sixth St., was arrested Thursday on a warrant for driving while license invalid

College hoping to tap underground water

Howard College officials believe they've found a way to deal with the severe drought, and the answer is literally below their feet.

Trustees will consider a proposal to drill up to six water wells on the Big Spring campus when they hold a special meeting at 11:30 a.m. Friday in the Student Union Building Tumbleweed Room.

Boys & Girls Club construction progressing

The building has gone up and the final stages of the project are in sight.

The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club was able to start construction on a new facility in February and is expecting the building to be completed sometime in October.

“We will be very excited to see it once it is finished and we are even more excited to move in,” Salvation Army Maj. Orville Chambless said.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• ADAN CHAVERA, 41, of 600 Holbert, was arrested Wednesday on charges of driving while license suspended/invalid – no insurance and failure to maintain financial responsibility.
• MELINDA ERIN WALKER, 29, of San Diego, Calif., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of hindering officers discharging official duties.
• LINDA DIANE HERNANDEZ, 36, of Lubbock, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant from another agency.

Animal cruelty arrest made

A Big Spring man was arrested Tuesday and charged with cruelty to livestock animals in connection with the July 13 seizure of several horses suffering from malnourishment.

Joel Venegas Estrella, 51, was booked into the Howard County jail on a charge of cruelty to livestock animals just before midnight, following an investigation by the Howard County Sheriff's Office, according to Sheriff Stan Parker.

"He was taken into custody without incident,” Parker said.

Redistricting on table

Big Spring school trustees are expected to put their formal stamp of approval on the district's single-member redistricting plan when they hold their monthly meeting at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the high school board room.

Redrawing the seven single-member trustee districts to adequately reflect population and demographic changes in the last 10 years has been a months-long process, involving lawyers, demographers and an advisory committee comprised of both school officials and local citizens.

• JIMMY FRANCIS GARRARD, 37, of 303 S.E. Ninth St., was arrested Tuesday on a warrant for assault – family violence.
• DENA GAYE COKER, 54, of 1403 S. Nolan, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of public intoxication.
• ISAAC DANIEL CHAVARRIA, 25, of 1504 Nolan, was arrested Tuesday on charges of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction and failure to maintain financial responsibility.
