December 21st
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• MICHAEL NEAL ROBERTS, 40, of 2500 Cheyenne, was arrested Tuesday on warrants for expired registration and failure to appear.
• ADAM GARCIA, 40, of 105 N. Fifth St. in Coahoma, was arrested Wednesday on warrants for driving while license invalid, failure to maintain financial responsibility and failure to appear (two counts).
• MONICA MONIC SOLIZ, 28, of 1106 Ridgeroad, was arrested Tuesday on warrants for no driver's license – when unlicensed and failure to appear.
December 20th
Incumbent Howard County Precinct 1 Commissioner Emma Brown filed to run for re-election Monday, setting up at least one local contest on the Democratic political party primary.
Brown, a longtime member of the commissioners court, will face off against local resident Larry Torres in the Democratic primary, which has been tentatively set for April 3 by state officials. Torres is a jailer with the Howard County Detention Center, according to Walter Shipman, chairman of the Howard County Democratic Party.
As state representatives and attorneys continue to bicker over redistricting in the Lone Star State, it's business as usual for for elections officials in the Crossroads area, as seats in Martin and Glasscock counties get ready to go up for grabs in this year's political party primaries.
Martin County will see at least two contested races come April 3 — the newly appointed date for the primaries, according to state officials — as the Precinct 1 and Precinct 3 seats on the county commissioners court have garnered a great deal of attention.

• JAKE ALLEN VALENCIA, 25, of 823 W. Seventh St., was arrested Monday on warrants for manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance (two counts).
• TONY DELAGARZA, 46, of 1002 E. 16th St., was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• MICHAEL NEAL ROBERTS, 40, of 2500 Cheyenne, was arrested Monday on warrants for expired registration and failure to appear.
December 19th
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• BRITTAIN COLE MOYA, 21, of Santa Fe, Texas, was arrested Sunday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
• ABEL LOPEZ, 33, of 410 Jill Rd. in Coahoma, was arrested Sunday on charges of public intoxication and resisting arrest, search or transportation.
• MILTON CRAIG HERRIDGE, 49, of 1700 S. Lancaster Apt. 404, was arrested Sunday on a warrant from another agency.
• DIEGO IVAN PORTILLO-GONZALEZ, 23, of Bidgeport, was arrested Sunday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
Friends and family members who confine themselves to their homes and don’t want to participate in holiday preparations need encouragement from loved ones to involve themselves in the season.
Many people feel sad during the holidays because of recent losses, time and financial stresses, and unrealistic expectations, said Robin Riha, LMSW, Big Spring State Hospital director of Social Work Services.
Howard College and Howard County officials are exploring the possibility of combining the two entities' library facilities under one roof.
College trustees and county commissioners will hear a report on the idea when trustees hold their monthly meeting at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Student Union Building's Tumbleweed Room.
College President Dr. Cheryl Sparks said the idea hatched a few weeks ago when officials were discussing the best ways to use a $250,000 gift from the Maria Hogue estate to improve the college library.
December 17th
Local resident Larry Torres has filed to run for the Precinct 1 seat on the Howard County commissioners on the Democratic ticket, with Monday the most recent deadline for political hopefuls to file to run in the upcoming March primaries.
Secret Santas are popping up everywhere.
Local resident Lupe Castro received an early Christmas present Friday afternoon when she was informed her layaway had been taken care of.
“It truly is a blessing,” Castro said. “It is a rare thing to see, but it’s nice to see there are still people out there with caring hearts.”
Wal-Mart Assistant Manager Erica Rodriques said the anonymous donor walked in and expressed the desire to pay for 22 layaways.
Lakeview Headstart, located at 1107 N.W. Seventh, had to shut their doors early Thursday.
Throughout the day, there had been a faint gas odor and for safety concerns Site Director Dominga Shockley decided it was in the best interest to go ahead and send students home for the day until the problem could be found and repaired.
According to Shockley, the problem was fixed by 5 p.m. Thursday. Classes went on as usual Friday, with an early release scheduled for the holiday break.
Classes at Lakeview Headstart will resume Jan. 2, 2012.
