Johnny Womack, environmental services and assistant director of public works with the city of Big Spring, sorts through items collected through the annual e-waste recycling program. Womack said the items collected will be recycled, preventing unwanted — and sometimes hazardous — items from being dumped in the municipal landfill.
The Big Spring City Council voted unanimously to rename the Big Spring Aquatic Center the Russ McEwen Aquatic Center in honor of the former mayor during a special meeting held Saturday afternoon.
The motion to rename the facility was made by District 4 Councilman Bobby McDonald.
Former mayor McEwen, who passed away at his home Oct. 21, heavily supported the aquatic center project, which was opened to the public last summer.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• JERRY MITCHELL MARCON, 20, of Snyder, Texas, was arrested Sunday on a warrant for criminal mischief.
• NICKOLAS VANCE JONES, 20, of 304 Circle, was arrested Sunday on four warrants from other agencies and a warrant for speeding in a school zone.
• BURGLARY OF A VEHICLE was reported in the 800 block of W. Interstate Highway 20.
• ASSAULT was reported in the 800 block of W. FM 700.
• CRIMINAL MISCHIEF was reported in the 1000 block of N. Runnels.
