Man charged with harming two children

February 29, 2012

A Big Spring man was arrested and charged with two counts of injury Tuesday evening after allegedly assaulting two children, according to officials with the Big Spring Police Department.

Ray Martinez Alvarado, 34, of 1500 Lincoln Ave., was arrested on charges of injury to a child with intent to cause bodily injury (two counts) after police officials say he physically assaulted the children, who are members of his household.

Landtroop talks redistricting, education

Redistricting may have been the scheduled focus of Tuesday's town hall meeting at the Hall Center of the Arts, but it was by no means the only topic addressed.

State Rep. Jim Landtroop opened the meeting by honoring Howard County Volunteer Fire Chief Tommy Sullivan and Fire Marshal Carl Condray with flags that flown over the capitol. The presentation was made as a way to recognize the service demonstrated during the past year's fire season.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• ALBERTO HOLGUIN MENDOZA, 67, of 406 N.W. 11th St., was arrested Tuesday on a charge of public intoxication.
• MICHAEL DON FULBRIGHT, 47, of 900 Runnels, was arrested Tuesday on warrants for public intoxication, speeding in a school zone and a warrant from another agency.
• RAY MARTINEZ ALVARADO, 34, of 1500 Lincoln Ave., was arrested Tuesday on charges of injury to a child with intent to cause bodily injury (two counts).

Man who dumped son insane, judge decides

SWEETWATER — A man who said voiceds told him to kill his 4-year-old son has been found not guilty of attempted capital murder by reason of insanity.

State District Judge Glen Harrison made the ruling Monday and ordered Carlos Rico to be committed to the maximum security North Texas State Hospital in Vernon for examination. According to documents, Rico will be returned to a Nolan County courtroom within 30 days for assessment of his mental progress, at which time Judge Harrison will decide whether to keep him hospitalized.

According to local tax officials, some area residents may have a rather sizable refund coming to them — they just aren't aware of it.

Refunds totaling more than $1 billion may be waiting for as many as 1 million people throughout the nation who did not file a federal income tax return for 2008, according to AARP Tax-Aide Coordinator Ray Alexander. However, any hope of collecting that money will vanish in April.

•RENE SALAZAR-PEREZ, 26, of 610 S. Douglas St., was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• LANCE BRANDEN LOVELACE, 40, of 410 W. Cuthbert Apt. F, Odessa, was arrested Monday on charges of unlawfully carrying a weapon, evading arrest/detention, resist arrest search or transport deadly weapon and failure to identify giving false/fictitious info.

• CASEY DON ROBERTS, 18, of 5300 N. County Rd. 57, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• JAVIER MANZANA PINEDA, 31, of 821 W. Sixth St., was arrested Sunday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

Jury selection begins in sexual assault of a child case

Jury selection in the trial of a 60-year-old Big Spring man indicted on charges of indecency with a child and aggravated sexual assault of a child began this morning in 118th District Court.
Ernesto Dutchover Garcia, 1300 E. 11th Place, was indicted Nov. 18, 2010, on four counts of indecency with a child (second-degree felony), three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child (first-degree felony) and a charge of continuous sexual assault of a child (first-degree felony).

Man indicted on charge of scalding 1-year-old

STANTON — A Martin County man who allegedly held a 1-year-old under scalding water was indicted by a Martin County grand Jury this week on a third-degree felony charge of injury to a child.
Dominick Robert Peña, 24, of 706 N. Gray in Stanton, was indicted on a single charge of injury to a child during the grand jury’s Thursday session.

Expert: Seat belt safety crucial in saving lives

Car seats are one more way to keep children safe — as long as they are used properly.
Scenic Mountain Medical Center Healthy Woman program has teamed up with Safe Kids of San Angelo for the second year to bring the free Car Seat Check to Big Spring. This year, the car seat check will coincide with the annual health fair, scheduled April 14 at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.
“Through this partnership with SMMC Healthy Woman, we are able to educate these families,” Catie Wiedenhofer, representative of Safe Kids San Angelo, said. “To them, this is truly invaluable.”
