City council races emerge

It appears a last-minute candidate for the District 4 seat on the Big Spring City Council will produce the only contested race of this year's local municipal election.

Bobby McDonald — local businessman and husband of incumbent District 4 Councilwoman Gloria McDonald — filed to run for the seat late Monday afternoon, according to officials with the city of Big Spring.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• YSA RUBIO, 51, of 621 Sgt. Paredez, was arrested Monday on a warrant from another agency.
• EDWIN LEE MATTHEWS, 49, of 1311 W. Second St., was arrested Monday on charges of possession of a controlled substance (two counts) and no driver's license – when unlicensed.
• ROBERT LEE ALDRIDGE, 54, of 1006 Baylor, was arrested Monday on warrants for failure to maintain financial responsibility and expired registration.

Kiwanis Club to hold annual pancake supper

Pancakes, pancakes and more pancakes.
The time is here for the annual Kiwanis Club of Big Spring pancake supper. All the pancakes you can eat will be in the Howard College cafeteria, located in the student union building, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday
“This is a long-standing tradition. We have people who remember having their grandparents take them and they have taken their children and grandchildren,” pancake supper co-chair Ann Duncan said.
The pancake supper has been taking place for the past 60-plus years and no end seems to be in sight, according to Duncan.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• SAMANTHA CYBIL LINDQUIST, 26, of 1306 Tucson, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• LORYN REA ESCOVEDO, 19, of 1216 E. 16th St., was arrested Sunday on a charge of consumption of alcohol by a minor.
• ABEL MARTINEZ, 37, of 2515 Chanute, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• CHRIS EUGENE DURHAM, 40, of 709 E. 12th St., was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.

Coahoma student arrested

COAHOMA — A Coahoma High School student was taken into custody late Friday afternoon following an alleged assault that led to the lock down of the campus and a earch of the area that included support from the Texas Department of Public Safety Aircraft Division.

Law enforcement officials spent much of Friday afternoon searching the area in and around Coahoma High School for the teenage student who, according to witnesses, attacked a female student before fleeing the campus on foot.

Project updates focus for Howard College trustees Monday

A new time, indeed, but familiar topics will greet Howard College's board of trustees Monday.

Expansion is the focus as trustees and college officials will convene at 6:30 p.m. to discuss growth at the San Angelo and SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf campuses. The board normally meets at noon, but the time was pushed back this week to give staff more time to prepare.

Howard College is considering constructing two buildings at its San Angelo campus, located at the West Texas Training Center.

Garcia gets 35 years for sexual assaults

A Big Spring man found guilty on multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child this week in 118th District Court was sentenced Thursday to serve 35 consecutive years in a Texas Department of Criminal Justice facility.

Ernesto Dutchover Garcia, 60, 1300 E. 11th Place, was found guilty by a jury on one count of indecency with a child and two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child, according to Assistant District Attorney Robin Orr.

Rocky start expected for annual gem show

Lola Lamb has been intrigued by rocks since the 1970s, when her mother got her interested in the Big Spring Prospector's Club.

“It's a learning process every day. Every rock you cut open, you are the first to see what the good Lord made there,” she said with a smile. “it's never ceased to amaze me how just a dull rock can hold something so beautiful inside.”

• MICHAEL DALE PRESTON, 27, of 2100 Morrison, was arrested Thursday on charges of duty on striking unattended vehicle, driving while intoxicated – third or more offense, evading arrest or detention with a vehicle with a previous conviction.
• LUIS ADOLFO PENA, 33, of 1105 E. 14th St., was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
• SAMANTHA CYBIL LINDQUIST, 26, of 1306 Tucson, was arrested Thursday on a charge of theft.
