A woman was killed Wednesday afternoon when the truck she was driving was hit by a Union Pacific train at the Alon USA owned Big Spring Refinery.
According to Alon USA public relations spokeman Blake Lewis, the woman was a contractor working at the local facility and not a refinery employee.
Emergency personnel with the refinery's emergency response team, the Howard County Sheriff's Office and Big Spring Fire Department all responded to the accident, which happened on refinery property at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Area residents will have a chance to show the mountain — Scenic Mountain, that is — who is boss this weekend.
The 14th annual Master the Mountain 5K/10K Fun Run and Walk is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday in Big Spring State Park. Registration is $25 and will take place from 7:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m.
“This year, one of the big things is we are bringing back the 10K run,” Ron Alton, state park manager, said.
The 10K run had been put on the back burner the past few years, but with the support of volunteers and other planning details, it will resume for 2012.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• JORDAN ALLEN MCLEOD, 21, of 618 Tulane, was arrested Wednesday on charges of evading arrest or detention with a previous conviction and purchasing/furnishing alcohol to a minor.
• JOHNNY ISIAIAS GONZALES JR., 22, of 810 E. 14th St., was arrested Wednesday on charges of evading arrest or detention and purchasing/furnishing alcohol to a minor.
