Hotel Settles reconstruction moving along

A piece of history will soon come back to life in Big Spring, with a little modern twist. According to Bill Cole, Hotel Settles director of operations, construction is moving along and a “soft” opening is set for August.

For 30 years, Hotel Settles — which shut its doors in 1982 — has been closed to the public, but by the end of this year, the majestic building will again be reopened. The Healthy Woman Advisory Council had the privilege Wednesday afternoon of having the first “official” meeting in the hotel.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• ANDREA DENISE ALENDER, 40, of 1615 Cardinal St., was arrested on charge of public intoxication.
• TRAVIS RUSSELL MCKISKI, 24, of 801 W. Marcy, was arrested on a warrant from other agency.
• TAKIRA NICOLE GREEN, 21, of 8100 W. Elizabeth Ln. of Fort Worth, was arrested on two warrants from other agency.
• JOSEPH DEWAYNE RICHTER, 25, of 904 S. Nolan St., was arrested on a charge of assault: family violence threat or offensive touch.

Mobile Meals in need of volunteers

A program which provides meals for elderly, home-bound Big Spring residents has put out a call for volunteers.

Mobile Meals, a private, non-profit organization, currently delivers noon meals for between 60 and 70 people a day, but officials said more help is needed.

Hippity, hoppity, Easter time is here.

Starting Friday, kids will have two days of hunting Easter eggs. Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veterans Home will be celebrating its 10th annual Easter egg hunt and First Church of the Nazarene will be hosting its third annual egg hunt.

“We always have a great turnout and we are expecting the same thing again this year,” said Emily Carrillo, interim activities director at Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• GLEN WILLARD OVERTON, 60, of 3908 Parkway Rd., was arrested Tuesday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
• XAVIER GARCIA MOYA, 37, of 2605 Dow, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
• JOSEPH DEWAYNE RICHTER, 24, of 904 S. Nolan, was arrested Tuesday on warrants for displaying fictitious license plate, failure to appear and driving while license invalid.

BSHS drama troupe bound for area contest

The Big Spring High School Drama Department is looking to get out of its comfort zone.

For the third time in four years under current Department Director Tabatha Wright, the BSHS thespians will compete in the upcoming University Interscholastic League One Act Play Area contest, to be held April 14 in Midland.

The top two rated plays at the area contest will advance to the UIL state contest later this spring in Austin. The state contest is relatively uncharted territory for BSHS; the school has qualified for a trip to Austin once in the past decade.

Check your voter cards now in time for May 12 elections

Time is running out for Crossroads residents who plan to cast a ballot in this year's municipal elections but haven't yet registered to vote, as Thursday, April 12, is the last day they can file their voter registration in time, according to local election officials.

Howard County Elections Administrator Saundra Bloom said the deadline is quickly approaching and urges area residents to check their voter readiness in preparation for the municipal contest, which is slated for May 12.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• ANDY DEMOND PIPER, 25, of 1217 W. Third St., was arrested Monday on warrants for no driver's license – when unlicensed, driving while license invalid and failure to appear.
• JIMMY FRANCIS GARRARD, 38, of 303 S.E. Ninth St., was arrested Monday on warrants for issuance of a bad check and theft by check – more than $20 and less than $500.
• JOAQUIN AGUIRRE DUENEZ JR., 40, of 700 N. Moss Lake Rd., was arrested Monday on a warrant for harassment.

CDC working to grow Coahoma

It may be the biggest secret in the Crossroads area, but board members of the Coahoma Development Corporation want folks to know the entity is doing its best to build Coahoma pride.

Since Oct. 1, 2010, the seven-member board has been striving to improve the quality of life for Coahoma residents.

CDC is a Type B Economic Development Corporation which was approved the voters in a May 2010 election. The voters approved the collection of an additional half-cent sales tax to be collected and used toward economic development in the community.

Vietnam vets 'welcomed home' during ceremony

Welcome Home … two simple words that have come to mean so much to Vietnam veterans.

Friday, The West Texas VA Health Care System hosted the second annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans program at Lone Star Aviation Hangar.

“Vietnam was full of tragedy, full of loss and full of sadness, just as any war was,” Daniel Marsh, director of West Texas VA Health Center said.

According to statistics provided that evening, more than 3 million soldiers served in the Southeast Asia theater of operations during the Vietnam conflict. Out of those soldiers, 2,338 went missing in action.
