Hundreds of this region's best show dogs will put their best paws forward this weekend at the Big Spring Kennel Club's annual Dog Show, set for Saturday and Sunday at Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.
The 42nd annual show opens at 8 a.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. Sunday. Admission is free.
Betty Kelley, one of the event's organizers, said high gasoline prices will probably hold down entries, but added that she still expects more than 400 dogs, some from as far away as Arizona, to participate this weekend.
Howard County Elections Administrator Saundra Bloom says early voting has gotten off to a slow start in the May 12 municipal election, a surprising fact considering what's at stake in this year's municipal election.
By the way, polls will be open until 7 this evening at the county courthouse.
âWe opened up Monday with approximately 150 votes,â Bloom said. âTuesday we had about 126 ballots, which was much slower than what we were expecting. Wednesday was around the same neighborhood. I'm not sure why things are moving so slowly.â
Great artists have to start somewhere.
Heritage Museum and Big Spring High School art students are running with that idea. The Big Spring High School Student Art Show will be on display in the museum gallery until May 15.
During this time, the public will have access to viewing more than 100 works from local students.
âThe works are examples of various assignments given throughout the school year,â said BSHS Art Teacher Judy Tereletsky. âEach student was asked to pick at least one item to display.â
