Construction of Big Spring's new elementary schools is reaching its final, furiously paced stages.
During their Thursday meeting, Big Spring Independent School District trustees learned that three of the four new elementary campuses are “essentially” complete, while construction crews have adopted an “all hands on deck” approach to getting the fourth school ready for the start of the new school year.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• JESSE TONY REYES JR., 25, of 1006 S. Goliad, was arrested Thursday on a warrant from other agency.
• AUDREY LANE SHERRILL, 28, of 1007 S. Nolan St., was arrested Thursday on a charge of criminal mischief impair/interrupt/divert public water.
• RYAN LYLE BLAKE, 30, of 1207 Settles St., was arrested Thursday on a warrant from other agency.
• MICHAEL DEAN NALL, 33, of 1605 Sunset Ave., was arrested Thursday on a charge of possession of marijuana less than or equal to two ounces.

A group of area residents are hot under the collar, and it has nothing to do with summertime temperatures.
About 15 people dissatisfied with their property tax bills aired their grievances at Wednesday's meeting of the Howard County Appraisal District board of directors.
The group voiced a variety of complaints, ranging from their belief their valuations were too high to their confusion over how property assessments are reached.
A Big Spring man found guilty of intoxication assault in 118th District Court was sentenced to four years in state jail Wednesday.
Wesley James Shoup, 44, of 800 W. Marcy No. 22 or 4016 Vicky, was indicted April 12, 2012, by a Howard County grand jury on a third-degree felony charge of intoxication assault.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• BILLY VASQUEZ HERNANDEZ, 49, of 1304 Lamar, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant from another agency.
• DELWIN LEWIS, 28, of 804 W. Interstate Highway 20, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant from another agency.
• SALENA MARIE TAYLOR, 33, of 3305 Cornell, was arrested Wednesday on eight warrants from other agencies.
• JOE LOUIS SANCHEZ, 52, of 2409 S. Scurry, was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication.

A Big Spring man was found guilty of intoxication assault in 118th District Court Tuesday for his part in the June 20, 2011, traffic accident which nearly claimed the life of a passenger in the vehicle he was driving.
Wesley James Shoup, 44, of 800 W. Marcy No. 22 or 4016 Vicky, was indicted April 12, 2012, by a Howard County grand jury on a third-degree felony charge of intoxication assault.
For 20 years, area people and organizations have been coming together for the Cactus and Crude Bike Ride to help those with multiple sclerosis (MS). On July 21 and 22, it will happen once again.
“This is something that gets people together helping people who can't help themselves,” said David Ham, owner of Peyton's Bike in Midland.

• MARCUS FUENTES, 36, of 216 Tubb Loop Rd., was arrested Tuesday on a charge of driving while license invalid.
• CHARLIE JAKE TURNER JR., 33, of 4215 Hamilton, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of criminal trespass.
• DAVID ARNULFO GARZA, 48, of 2620 Albrook, was arrested Tuesday on charges of driving while license invalid (two counts) and failure to maintain financial responsibility.

Howard County Commissioners opted to table a proposed burn ban Monday morning following a weekend of intermittent rainfall throughout the Crossroads area, moisture local firefighting officials say should buy residents a few weeks of relative safety from wildfires.
Precinct 3 Commissioner Jimmie Long — serving in place of County Judge Mark Barr, who was unable to attend Monday's meeting — said the county had received a recommendation from Volunteer Fire Department Chief Tommy Sullivan to table the proposed county-wide ban for a minimum of two weeks.

• BILLY WAYNE CHRISTIAN, 52, of 2808 Sherman Rd., was arrested Monday on warrants for no driver's license – when unlicensed (two counts), expired registration (two counts), failure to maintain financial responsibility (two counts) and failure to appear (six counts).
• BILLY RAY HALL, 34, of Flat, Texas, was arrested Monday on a warrant from another agency.
• ROBERT RUBEN SANCHEZ, 48, of 1023 Stadium, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
