The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• CHRISTOPHER RYAN COLEGROVE, 20, of 1311 Madison, was arrested Wednesday on charges of evading arrest or detention, disorderly conduct – fighting, failure to appear (eight counts), driving without safety belt secured, criminal mischief – more than $500 and less than $1,500 and a warrant from another agency.
• ANDRES NIETO, 42, of 1901 Hilltop Rd., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of failure to stop and render aid injury/death.

118th officials warn of telephone scam

Officials with the 118th District Court are warning area residents of a telephone scam where con artists are claiming to be collecting fines from locals who allegedly owe fins for missing jury duty.

According to 118th District Judge Timothy Yeats, his office was recently made aware of the scam, which is targeting local residents.

Stanton readies for 79th Old Settlers Reunion

STANTON — Stanton residents will focus on “Big Dreams in a Small Town” as a 79-year-old tradition continues this year — the Old Settlers Reunion returns July 14, 2012.

“We are celebrating a time of growth and prosperity, as well as remembering our predecessors who made it possible,” Marsha Todd, event organizer, said in a press release.

Drunk drivers beware: Troopers on DWI patrol during July 4 period

If your plans to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday include drinking and driving, they should include a trip to the county detention center, as state and local law enforcement will be on the lookout for violators during the next several days.

The Texas Department of Public Safety have increased DWI patrols for a nine-day period which includes Wednesday, according to state officials, with troopers focusing DWI patrols in high-risk locations at times when alcohol-related crashes are most frequent.

Seeing red, white and blue

Howard County residents will celebrate the July 4 holiday in ways both big and small over the course of the next few days.

Undoubtedly, the biggest community celebration occurs tonight, when the annual Pops in the Park, featuring music, food and fireworks, is held at the Comanche Trail Park Amphitheater.

Gates will open at 5 p.m., along with the food vendors which will be located at the top of the amphitheater.

Pre-show entertainment will be provided by former Big Spring resident Don Turner, who will perform Dixieland-style music from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• NINFA MORENO GARCIA, 56, of 1501 Sycamore, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• ALBERTO GALLEGOS, 22, of 505 N.W. 10th St., was arrested Monday on warrants for failure to maintain financial responsibility, no driver's license – when unlicensed, failure to control speed, failure to appear and a warrant from another agency.
• TIMOTHY ALEX UNDERWOOD, 35, of 111 E. 16th St., was arrested Monday on a warrant from another agency.

Bond exceeds $200,000 for suspect in Friday shootings

Bond has been set at a total of more than $200,000 for the Big Spring man believed to be responsible for the shooting of four people Friday night at a birthday party in east Big Spring.

Bond has been set at a total of $201,000 — $50,000 for each of the four counts of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury and $1,000 for a single count of driving without a license — for Holston Banks III, 20, who was arrested shortly after midnight on Friday night.

Banks remained in the custody of the Howard County Detention Center as of the time of this report.

Pops with a Dixieland twist

The same flare as usual, with an added pinch of Dixieland, is what can be expected from this year's Pops in the Park entertainment.

Before the Big Spring Symphony takes the stage Tuesday at the annual event and the fireworks go off, Don Turner will take the stage with his Dixieland jazz band from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Turner, a former Big Spring resident, will perform as the pre-show entertainment. The audience can expect to hear New Orleans stye Dixieland music, Turner said.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• JOSE ANTONIO NIETO, 18, of 1310 Park St., was arrested Sunday on charges of resisting arrest, search or transportation and public intoxication.
• DANNY ZAMBRANO, 42, of 903 E. 13th St., was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• ASHLEY ANN TAYLOR, 32, of 1112 Sycamore, was arrested Sunday on warrants for disregarding stopo sign, expired driver's license and expired registration.
