As far as problems go, it's a good one for the local school district to have.
Big Spring Independent School District trustees learned during Thursday's special meeting enrollment has spiked significantly from the same time last year.
Superintendent Steven Saldivar told the school board first-week enrollment figures for the 2012-2013 school year showed 4,028 students enrolled locally, a jump of 153 from last year at this time.
It's never a good idea to drink and drive, but law enforcement officials say it will be particularly foolish this weekend.
As it has in past years, the Texas Department of Public Safety will increase DWI patrols during the Labor Day holiday weekend, officials said. DPS troopers will focus DWI patrols in high-risk locations at times when alcohol-related crashes are most frequent.
During the Labor Day enforcement effort last year, DPS troopers made more than 2,000 DWI arrests and approximately 550 of those were the direct result of the increased patrols, officials said.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• ROBERTO LAFUENTE, 28, of Del Rio, was arrested Thursday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
• JOSE NICANOR GARFIAS III, 36, of 1204 S. Lancaster, was arrested Thursday on warrants from other agency (x2).
• LAURA LEUNA YANEZ, 33, of 1213 Mobile St., was arrested Thursday on charges of public intoxication and criminal mischief under $50.
• CARLEO BARRON, 33, of San Antonio, was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication.
