Howard's 1962 track and field team

During halftime of Thursday's Howard College-Western Texas basketball game, members of Howard's 1962 track and field team were honored on the 50th anniversary of their national junior college title, one of three straight championships the squad earned. With members of the team behind her, College President Dr. Cheryl Sparks addresses the crowd during the ceremony.

Canterbury Senior Sweetheart Dance is tonight

Calling all sweethearts.
Canterbury is having its eighth annual Senior Sweetheart Dance tonight from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the public area at the Canterbury South building.
“This is a great opportunity for the residents to have their family come out and see where they are living,” Executive Director Shannon Nabors said. “It also provides an opportunity for the residents to go dance, have fun, hear some good music and not have to worry about driving back at night.”
Each year, according to Nabors, Cantrbury hosts two dances.

Are you ready to run for love?

Time to pull out the running shoes.
Big Spring State Park and Timing Specialists have teamed up to put on the inaugural Run 2 Love 2 Run. The Valentine’s Day themed run will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday on Scenic Mountain.
“This is an incentive for folks to stay fit,” State Park Manager Ron Alton said. “As always though, just because run is in the name doesn’t mean people can’t walk the distance if they choose to.”
Local race director Craig Felty found the inspiration from a few couples he knows who are working toward running together and staying in shape.

BSISD: Construction continues, dress code stalls

Work is moving along at the four Big Spring Independent School District elementaries under construction, trustees were told Thursday, but a proposal to implement a standardized dress code has stalled completely — at least for now.
Thursday, board members took a tour of Goliad Elementary to see just how far the construction has progressed.

Few candidates for school board elections

School board elections are are oh the horizon for area districts, including Big Spring, Coahoma, Forsan, Stanton, Sands and Grady. Glasscock County ISD will not be holding school board elections until November.

Candidate filing began Tuesday throughout the Crossroads, but districts report little activity.

Master Gardener classes scheduled

For those who want to be a Master Gardener, the chance is coming.

The first class of the year will take place 5:30 p.m. to 8: 30 p.m. Feb. 21 in Horace Garrett Building Room 204 at Howard College for those wanting to receive certification to be a Master Gardener.

“They have the opportunity to register until the beginning of the class, but if they miss the first class they will have to wait until next year's sessions,” Walter Ward, Howard County Master Gardeners president, said.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• MARCUS ARMENDAREZ, 48, of 1008 N. Gregg St., was arrested Wednesday on charges of possession of marijuana – two ounces or less and possession of drug paraphernalia.
• ANGELA MARIE ROBINSON, 29, of 1600 S. Nolan, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant for tattoos prohibited for persons under 18 years of age.
• MARTY WAYNE HUCKABEE, 31, of 1309 Wright St., was arrested Wednesday on warrants for driving without being secured by a safety belt and failure to appear (three counts).

Oilfield explosion leads to man's death

GARDEN CITY, Texas — A Harlingen man was killed Tuesday afternoon when a high-pressure line on the oil well he was working on southwest of Garden City exploded, releasing water and acid, according to law enforcement officials.

Noe Cabriales, 51, of Harlingen, was pronounced dead at the scene by Glasscock County Justice of the Peace Kay Donna Machicek shortly after 12:30 p.m. at an oil well being operated by Laredo Petroleum Inc.

Election declaration on BSISD agenda

Election time is drawing near for the Big Spring Independent School District.

During the upcoming board of trustees meeting, set for Thursday in the high school board room at 5:15 p.m., one of the action items on the agenda is the school board trustee election order and appointments for the May 12 election.

Three positions on the board are up for election, District 2, represented by Maria Padilla, District 3, held by Ken McIntosh, and District 4, held by Tony Kennedy.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• MARILYN MARIE MENDEZ, 41, of 3509 E. Interstate Highway 20 Apt. 20, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant from another agency.
• KYLE WADE GUTHRIE, 27, of 408 W. Hillside Dr., was booked into the county jail Tuesday by the BSPD on a charge of online solicitation of a minor – intent sexual activity.
• WENDY ANN THOMAS, 33, of 620 State, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant for manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance in a drug free zone.
