November 16th
Mark another successful year down for Empty Bowls, one of the biggest United Way of Big Spring and Howard County fundraisers.
With more than 250 people supporting the annual fundraiser, the organization brought in a little more than $6,000 toward the 2013 campaign goal set at $300,000.
“Every year is a success, but this year was just amazing. We changed venues in order to allow more people to experience the event,” United Way Executive Director Sandy Stewart said.
November 15th
Remember those tales mom and dad use to read to you at bedtime? It's time to recreate them for the Big Spring Herald Community Christmas Parade, themed “A Storybook Christmas.”
The parade is Saturday, Dec. 1, but the deadline to enter and be eligible for prizes is Friday — as in tomorrow.
Entries will be judged in the following categories: Individual or family; civic group, church or school; commercial; industrial; and mounted.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• SAMMY HERNANDEZ LIMON, 30, of 1 Courtney Place, was arrested Wednesday on charges of driving while intoxicated – third or more offense and driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
• MICHAEL SHANE ALLEN, 38, of 3701 Hamilton, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of possession of marijuana – two ounces or less.
• JASON LYNN NICHOLS, 30, of Palestine, Texas, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant from another agency.

That’s the question Howard and Glasscock Counties can expect to be hearing from Relay For Life members for 2013. The annual event is set for April 19-20 at Blankenship Field.
During the Community Kick-off for the 2013 Relay For Life, held Tuesday night in Garrett Hall at First United Methodist Church, the goals for the upcoming Relay were announced.
Law enforcement officials with the Howard County Sheriff's Office say the investigation into the Oct. 27 shooting that claimed the life of one Big Spring man and injured another is still ongoing, as investigators try to piece together the events of the night.

• ROBERT ELGIN LITTLEFIELD, 38, of San Angelo, Texas, was arrested Monday on a warrant for harassment.

• BURGLARY OF A BUILDING was reported:
In the 4100 block of Dixon.
In the 1800 block of Old Colorado City Highway.

It's turkey time at the Big Spring Salvation Army, as the local charity prepares to open its arms — and its kitchen — to the community for its annual Thanksgiving dinner Thursday, Nov. 22.
Prep work for the dinner is expected to get under way next, according to Salvation Army Social Worker Bessie Flores, continuing daily until the meal is ready to be served.
Geek and green will unite Friday, as Keep Big Spring Beautiful and the city of Big Spring team up for the annual e-waste collection day in an effort to keep electronic devices out of the municipal landfill and recycle materials.
Collection is set for 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. for businesses or residents needing to do away with 10 or more computers or other electronic items. However, the collection will be open to everyone in the community Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Both collections are being held at the Municipal Landfill, located at 4100 E. FM 700.

• ZYON GONZALEZ, 35, of 811 Debra Lane, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• CHRISTOPHER JOSEPH VALLE, 21, of 1903 S. Johnson, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• ALLISON REDDING, 40, of 1314 Mt. Vernon, was arrested Sunday on two warrants from other agencies.
• BURGLARY OF A HABITATION was reported in the 4100 block of Dixon.
• THEFT was reported in the 900 block of Willia.
