January 30th
For the ninth time in a row, the Big Spring High School Debate team brought home the University Interscholastic League District Cross-Examination Debate crown.
Bringing home the gold was the team of Seth Trevino and Caleb Gonzales.
âWinning district and going to the UIL CX State Meet is awesome, but Iâm also glad that I could continue the tradition of district champions here at BSHS.â Trevino said.
Joining Trevino and Gonzales at the state meet will be the team of Forrest McJunkin and Shiloh Creswell. This will be Creswellâs second year attending the meet.
January 28th
Love the park? Love to run?
February 11 will provide an opportunity to combine love for the park and the love to run and even a chance to share it with your partner, in the first annual Run 2 Love 2 Run at the Big Spring State Park.
âValentineâs Day was the inspiration for this event, of course,â Park Manager Ron Alton said. âThis is an incentive for folks to stay fit.â
Hauchen Zhang, gold medalist of the Van Cliburn piano competition, will perform with the Big Spring Symphony Orchestra in Garrett Hall the evening of Saturday, Feb. 4.
The concert was originally scheduled fto be held at the Big Spring Municipal Auditorium, but delays in renovation of the facility forced a change of venue. Garrett Hall is located at First United Methodist Church, at the corner of Scurry and Fourth streets. The concert will begin at 8 p.m.
Zhang, of China, is the first gold medalist to perform with the orchestra, according to Dr. Keith Graumann, conductor.
January 27th
The theatre department is putting on the Wizard of Oz tonight and Saturday night. Both performances will start at 7 p.m. Admission for adults is $5 and student tickets will be available at the door. The performance will take place in the high school auditorium.
The distance between communities along Interstate 20 is about to get a little bit shorter — well, faster, anyway.
The Texas Transportation Commission on Thursday approved 75 mile per hour designations for close to 1,500 miles of interstate, including I-20 through Howard County. In all, the changes impact 60 counties.
One important fact motorists need to know is the changes won't take place until the signs are posted.
âSmarttâ advice and laughter filled the Dora Roberts Community Center ballroom Thursday evening as Lisa Smartt, author and comedian, delivered her words of wisdom during âThree Thrilling Yearsâ of Healthy Woman.
This was the second year she was featured as the guest speaker for the event.
âThere was just something about Lisa that made the decision to invite her back for a command performance an easy one. She is one of us,â Scenic Mountain Medical Center Marketing Director Kim Howell said.

⢠GUS EARL FADE, 37, of 1317 Mulberry, was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication.
⢠FELICIA CANALES, 22, of 616 State St., was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
⢠JOHN ANTHONY PANTOJA, 21, of 2202 Alabama, was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
⢠PATRICIA SUE CLARK, 35, of Splendora, Texas, was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
January 26th
Wednesday's rainfall helped boost Colorado River Municipal Water District reservoir levels around the region, but according to local officials, the increases are small when compared to the “big picture” the current water shortage has left West Texans to face.
According to meteorologists with the National Weather Service Office in Midland, Big Spring saw a total rainfall of approximately .23 of an inch, while Snyder received .18 of an inch and the city of Midland saw .27 of an inch. All totals are currently unofficial.
Some things are just meant to stay the same.
Unforeseen events have forced the 2012 Howard/Glasscock Relay For Life back to Blankenship Field. The event was scheduled to be held at Memorial Stadium this year.
“We were hoping to do something different this year, but due to the installation of turf at Memorial Stadium, we are going to be moving the event back to where its roots are,” Manny Negron, event chairman, said.

⢠FRANCES BILLALBA MCKISKI, 58, of 1600 S. Lancaster Apt. 308, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant from another agency.
⢠SHIMEON RASHAD MAGERS, 29, of 1511 Tucson, was arrested Wednesday on two warrants from other agencies.
⢠KENNETH WAYNE SUGGS, 49, of 1006 E. 14th St., was arrested Wednesday on a warrant for theft â more than $50 and less than $500.
⢠CRAIG BENJAMIN REYNOLDS, 31, of 1303 Sycamore, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant from another agency.
