United Way gearing up for next run

Another wave comes in.

New officers and members were installed for the 2012 year of the United Way of Big Spring and Howard County during the organization’s annual meeting Tuesday.

Agencies and board members gathered at Dora Roberts Community Center for a recap of last year’s success and to share what’s in store for the coming year.

Election still up in the air

While the state's situation regarding redistricting has left many counties in limbo regarding upcoming election dates — most notably the political party primaries currently slated for April 3 — Howard County election officials say it's full steam ahead for them.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• QUETIN MARCEL VANDERBILT, 25, of 2624 Langley, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant for failure to control speed.
• LAFAWN FAYE CANTU, 39, of 508 Young St., was arrested Tuesday on a charge of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance.
• JOE ERNEST VALENCIA JR., 28, of 202 N.E. Third St., was arrested Tuesday on a charge of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance.

2 killed in Martin County crash

January 24, 2012

Two people were killed and three others were transported to area hospitals following a traffic accident Monday evening on Highway 176 approximately six miles east of Highway 349 in Martin County, according to officials with the Department of Public Safety.

Otis Nesbit, 50, a truck driver out of Millersview, Texas, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at approximately 8:59 p.m. by Martin County Justice of the Peace Jerrall Hedrick.

Power lines to be re-routed for law enforcement center

Howard County commissioners gave the go ahead to re-route power lines around the Howard County Detention Center in preparation for construction of a new joint law enforcement center during Monday morning’s meeting, a decision that could spell a minimal delay for the project.

Commissioners met with Jim Clements, area manager for Oncor Electric Delivery, during the meeting to discuss the re-routing efforts and how long it will take Oncor to complete the work.

• GARY LEE BOGNER, 45, of Mabank, Texas, was arrested Monday on a warrant from another agency.
• FRANK FIERRO JR., 64, of 603 N.W. Fifth St., was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• MICHAEL REY LEWIS, 50, of 1002 Main Apt. 34, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• JORDAN WESTON HAMILTON, 23, was arrested Monday on a charge of driving while license invalid.

Eagles cooking up ways to help Children in Need

Terlingua may have its International Chili Championship and Nebraska its World Chili Cookoff Championship, but when it comes to warming the hearts of West Texans, nothing beats a bowl of chili from the Fraternal Order of Eagles Annual Chili Cook-off.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles will pull out its well-seasoned cast-iron pots and gather its secret stash of heated spices to host its 10th Annual Chili Cook-off Jan. 28, benefitting the West Texas Centers Children-In-Need Fund.

Healthy Woman anniversary set Thursday

Hard to believe that three years of Healthy Woman have gone by.
Scenic Mountain Medical Center Healthy Woman program is “Celebrating Three Thrilling Years” at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 26 in the Dora Roberts Community Center ballroom.
“It is a relaxed, browse and mingle time so folks can come as they are ready. We like to think of it as a transition period,” SMMC Marketing Director Kim Howell said, “where folks lay aside the problems and stress of the day and get in the mood to have a terrific evening.”
Special guest speaker will again be Lisa Smartt, author and comedienne.

• JARRON DAWAN VANDERBILT, 28, of 1502 Lincoln, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.

Police seek hit and run driver, vehicle

Big Spring Crimestoppers is hoping to gather crucial information regarding a hit and run accident near the intersection of Sgt. Paredez and Trades Avenue Jan. 5 that led to the death of a 62-year-old Big Spring man.
Eleutario Torres Padron, 62, was discovered in the roadway by a passerby Thursday, Jan. 5, in the 600 block of Sgt. Paredez on the city’s north side, according to police reports.
