January 19th
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• BECKY ANN ZUBIATE, 28, of 1905 Wasson Rd. 45, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant for assault: causes bodily injury.
• LARRY YBARRA, 42, of 1506 Wood St., was arrested Wednesday on a warrant for driving while license suspended/invalid previous conviction.
•CRIMINAL MISCHIEF was reported in the 5100 block of E. FM 846.
• THEFT was reported:
In the 200 block of W. Third Street.
In the 500 block of Highland Drive.
January 18th
More than five years — and $25 million — after announcing their plans to renovate the historic downtown Settles Hotel, Big Spring natives Brint and Kristopher Ryan may be close enough to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
However, after plenty of missed deadlines already behind them, Kris Ryan, general manager of the Settles Hotel Development Company and overseer of the restoration project, said any projected completion date is a nightmare just waiting to happen when dealing with a project of this magnitude.
No school, but this time it wasn't because of ice and snow.
A 20-inch main water break, which occurred Tuesday night on the north side of the Big Spring High School campus, caused the Big Spring Independent School District and Howard College campus to cancel classes for the day.
“We discovered the issue about 6:30 this morning when a parent called, which caused us to discover the break,” Director of Maintenance and Transportation at BSISD Wayland Pierce said.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• CHRISTINA JEAN DIAZ, 28, of 610 N.W. Eighth St., was arrested Tuesday on a warrant from another agency and a warrant for no driver's license – when unlicensed.
• MICHAEL THOMAS MERRILL, 33, of New Orleans, La., was arrested Tuesday on a charge of public intoxication and use or possession of illegal smoking paraphernalia.
January 17th

Wednesday, the VA Medical Center's name will officially become the George H. O'Brien Jr. VA Medical Center. A special ceremony is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., following a reception at 3:30 p.m.
“We're excited that this has become a reality and we will be honored to recognize such a distinguished veteran who was raised in the Big Spring community,” Iva Jo Hanslik, public affairs officer at VAMC, said.
The gold medalist of the Van Cliburn piano competition, Hauchen Zhang, will perform with the Big Spring Symphony Orchestra in Garrett Hall of the First Methodist Church at 8 p.m. Feb. 4.
The event was to have taken place in the Municipal Auditorium, but due to a delay in construction, it was moved to Garrett Hall. Zhang, of China, is the first gold medalist to perform with the orchestra.
Dr. Keith Graumann, conductor, said several Van Cliburn finalists have played in Big Spring, but added, “It is really special to have the gold medalist.”

• ANNALISA IVANKA LEVARIO, 21, of 405 Pennsylvania, was arrested Monday on a charge of driving while intoxicated – blood alcohol more than .15.
• CESAR MARTINEZ, 29, of 307 N.E. 10th St., was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• CLARISSA BRIONNE TORRES, 22, of 1803 Alabama, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• JESUS CERVANTES JR., 30, of 110 N.W. Fourth St., was arrested Monday on a charge of criminal mischief.
January 16th
According to Howard County Volunteer Fire Chief Tommy Sullivan, county officials will likely lift the existing burn ban during Tuesday morning's meeting of the commissioners court, marking the first time in more than a year-and-a-half since the Crossroads hasn't been under such a ban.
Sullivan said considerable rain showers — not to mention snowfalls, which just recently melted off — have at least temporarily slaked the thirst in the county's brushlands, giving local land owners a much-needed window to perform some upkeep.

• CHANCE PATRICK NEWTON, 21, of 1309 Virginia, was arrested Saturday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
• BOBBIE VILA OLIVAREZ, 27, of 1302 Wright, was arrested Saturday on warrants for failure to appear (three counts), failure to identify, no driver's license – when unlicensed and failure to maintain financial responsibility.
• RODRICK LAMOND CONELY, 43, of 1425 E. Sixth St. Apt. 10, was arrested Saturday on a warrant from another agency.
January 14th
A heater treater erupted into flames Saturday morning, causing a huge smoke streak across the city of Big Spring. The heater treater was located on the northwest portion of Howard County off FM 176. Howard County Volunteer Fire Department was on the scene, ensuring the fire did not spread to a nearby tank battery.
According to other media sources, three heater treaters were on fire at once. The fire has been contained and put out according to reports.
