Howard County officials have decided that maybe road access permits aren’t such a good idea, after all.
Faced with the threat of litigation from oil businesses and other commercial entities, commissioners voted unanimously Monday to rescind a recently approved road access permit program.
Earlier this year, commissioners approved a $4,500 fee for commercial interests wishing to build driveways and other access points onto county roads. After several business concerns complained that the fee was excessive, commissioners later reduced the fee to $2,500.
A light turnout Monday marked the first day of early voting in Howard County for the Nov. 5 constitutional amendments election.
“We've had eight so far,” said Howard County Election Administrator Saundra Bloom, commenting on the first four hours of voting Monday. “This is strictly for the constitutional amendments.”
So far, 13 people have cast early ballots for the state-wide election which will decided nine constitutional amendments. Early voting continues through Nov 1. from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday at the election office in the Howard County Courthouse.
