Kid's Klub signups take off at Hangar 25

How about sending your kids to boot camp this summer?
Hangar 25 Air Museum will be holding a Bombardier Boot Camp July 8-12 for children age 6 through 12. The World War II-themed Kid's Klub event will be both educational and entertaining.
“It is going to be a wonderful opportunity for children to learn and have fun at the same time,” said Genevieve Stockburger, museum administrator. “It will be like a summer camp in that children will learn about planes used in World War II along with survival tips and they will participate in various activities and games and make some cool crafts.”

Benavides sworn in as council member

Raul Benavides was sworn into office Tuesday night during the meeting of the Big Spring City Council, as the new District 5 representative replaced one-term councilman Craig Olson, who did not seek re-election.
Benavides was sworn into office by City Finance Director Peggy Walker, following the canvass of the June 8 runoff election. The canvass was approved by the council on a unanimous vote.

Infrastructure needs, employee retention top city wish list

The Big Spring City Council got its first look at budget issues facing the municipality as it prepares to begin work on its 2013-2014 fiscal plan, a budget that will likely target infrastructure needs and efforts to stop the turnover of much-needed city employees.
Part of a rather lengthy council meeting, Tuesday night's budget work session included a presentation from Interim City Manager Todd Darden, who highlighted some of the city's most pressing needs moving into the coming year.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• MARK ANTHONY CHAVERA, 24, of 1502 Chickasaw St., was arrested Tuesday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid previous conviction.
• KIMBERLY NICOLE RIOS, 26, of 1606 Bluebird St., was arrested Tuesday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid previous conviction.
• DARRIN RAY CROOKS, 53, of 4200 Bilger St., was arrested Tuesday on a warrant from another agency.

Benavides wins runoff; to be sworn in Tuesday

The Big Spring City Council will canvass the results of the Saturday night runoff between District 5 challengers during its Tuesday meeting, awarding the position to Raul Benavides, who won the election with 63 percent of the vote.
Benavides and challenger J.D. Smith first met in the May 11 election — joined by fellow political hopeful Clint Collins — with Benavides taking top honors with 44.21 percent (187 ballots) of the vote, while opponents Smith won 33.81 percent (143 ballots) and Clint Collins took 21.99 percent (93 ballots).

West Texas VA interim director hails from Midland

It's a homecoming of sorts for the interim director of the local VA medical center.
Andrew “Andy” M. Welch, currently director of the Amarillo VA Health Care System, is pulling double duty of sorts for the next few months — he has been named interim director of the West Texas VA Health Care System based in Big Spring, but will continue serving in Amarillo as well.
In Big Spring, Welch succeeds Daniel Marsh, who resigned in late May to become director of the VA medical center in Oklahoma City.
Welch assumed his interim duties here June 2.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• JOSE CASTRO, 42, transient, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• JACOB ALEXANDER GALAN, 23, of 1607 S. Main St., was arrested Sunday on charges of evading arrest or detention, public intoxication and shoplifting - $50 or less.
• TYLER JAMES SMITH, 28, of Sweetwater, Texas, was arrested Sunday on charges of hindering officers discharging official duties and public intoxication.

JP Dobbs stepping down

Howard County commissioners will begin the process of replacing a “great asset” when they meet at 10 a.m. Monday in the county courthouse's third-floor courtroom.

Commissioners will go into closed session during the meeting to discuss finding a replacement for Quail Dobbs, who is retiring after more than 14 years as Precinct 2 justice of the peace.

County Judge Mark Barr said Dobbs informed him of his decision to retire within the past two weeks.

Trustee search on college agenda

It is possible the Howard County Junior College District Board of Trustees could have a new member as soon as Monday.

The board meets at 12:30 p.m. Monday in the student union building's Tumbleweed Room, and one of the main topics to consider will be finding a replacement for former trustee Larry McLellan, who resigned in May following his election as Big Spring mayor.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. June 7 and 7 a.m. today:
• TIFFANY ANN ELDER, 31, of 3614 Parkway, was arrested Friday on charges of criminal trespass of a habitation or shelter, three counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license invalid, defective head lamps, failure to appear and a warrant for criminal trespass from another agency.
• KENNETH CLARK SMITH, 26, of 17900 S. HWY 87, was arrested Friday on a charge of reckless driving.
