Driving past road work projects on Third and Fourth streets may be an inconvenience, but rest assured it's not exactly a walk in the park for the workers involved, either.
Paving just a small section of one of Big Spring's downtown streets is hot, smelly and exacting work, requiring the use of high-dollar specialized equipment and the labors of more than a dozen workers at a time, all to lay a strip of two-inch deep asphalt the length of a city block.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• JOSE LUIS RIVERA, 25, of 1900 Martin Luther King Blvd. Apt. 303, was arrested Monday on a warrant from another agency.
• SAM PENA JR., 33, of 208 N. Nolan, was arrested Monday on a warrant from another agency.
• JUAN GILBERT HINOJOSA, 41, of 610 Linda Lane, was arrested Monday on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
• JOSHUA DAVID DECKER, 23, of Stanton, Texas, was arrested Monday on warrants for speeding and failure to appear.

The Big Spring City Council will hold a special meeting Tuesday evening to discuss a a short list of items, including an executive session to consider the duties and evaluation of the city manager and to deliberate regarding Colonial Hills Estates.
According to the meeting agenda, District 6 Councilman Marvin Boyd is expected to deliver an update from the city's newly appointed employee retention committee, while Interim Police Chief Chad Williams will discuss special recognition plaques planned for the Troy M. Hogue Joint Law Enforcement Center.
As area students hungrily await the end of the school year, many parents are faced with a child care dilemma during the summer months.
However, the Salvation Army's Boys and Girls Club has an answer, as the local charity prepares to kick off its annual summer program June 10.
Boys and Girls Club program director Duane Shackelford said the program is expected to serve approximately 120 to 140 area children between the ages of 5 years and 18 years, and with a new facility ready to go, the program will have even more to offer this year.

• ALDIN ELIOT ERSKINE, 23, of 2629 Langley, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• MARTIN LEE BENTACUR, 45, of 215 N.E. Ninth St., was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.

Andrew Martinez and his son Cruz Granado took advantage of the spring-like weather at the Big Spring Lake in Comanche Trail Park. Despite expected freezing temperatures Saturday morning, the conditions were mild and the fish were biting.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. May 3, 2013 and 7 a.m. today:
• JASON WAYNE ENGLISH, 35, transient, was arrested Friday on a warrant for criminal trespass – property, building, aircraft, vehicle.
• CHRISTOPHER RYAN COLEGROVE, 21, of 807 16th St., was arrested Friday on a warrant from another agency for consumption of alcohol by a minor and failure to appear.
• DANIEL RAY LEWIS, 24, of 106 Carey, was arrested Friday on a warrant from another agency.
FORSAN — While a lot of attention in Forsan Independent School District's bond election is focused on a proposal for a new elementary campus, the district has a lot planned for the junior high/high school building, as well.
Voters will decide next Saturday whether to approve a $23.8 million construction bond. The majority of that money is earmarked for a new campus to replace Elbow Elementary, but several million dollars would be funneled toward enhancements at the secondary building.
Many high school seniors are already making plans for college and Brady Gartman is certainly no different, except his college plans are, shall we say, a bit more regimented than most.
Gartman, a Forsan High School senior and the son of Dean and Misty Gartman of Glasscock County, has been accepted to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy starting in late June.
Gartman was nominated for the appointment by U.S. Representative Mike Conaway and received notification of his acceptance into the academy in late March.
With two days to go, the latest available early voting figures for Howard County indicate a little more than 100 people a day have cast ballots in the Big Spring municipal elections
Early voting in all of the elections continues Monday and Tuesday on the first floor of the Howard County Courthouse, with election day taking place Saturday, May 11.
“We've got two days left in the early voting period and we want to encourage everyone who can to get out and vote,” said Saundra Bloom, elections administrator.
