Fing stagnant for municipal elections

Officials with the city of Big Spring say filings for the May 11 election have been moving along slowly as the March 1 deadline for political hopefuls to file their candidacy approaches.

The mayoral seat, along with the District 5 seat on the council, will be decided by the May 11 contest.

Incumbent Mayor Tommy Duncan has indicated he will not seek a second term in the office, saying he never intended to serve more than one term in the position.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• RONALD STANLEY HASELBY, 62, of Carlsbad, N.M., was arrested Monday on a charge of urinating in a public place.
• CHRISTOPHER LEE BEDFORD, 32, of 2513 Dow, was arrested Monday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
• CRIMINAL MISCHIEF was reported in the 1100 block of E. 13th Street.
• THEFT was reported:
In the 7000 block of N. Service Road.
In the 3600 block of W. Highway 80.

BSISD spellers regional bee bound

Five Big Spring Independent School District students are hoping to spell their way to Washington D.C.

The five spellers will represent their campuses and BSISD when they participate in the Scripps-Howard Regional Spelling Bee, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday on the Midland College campus.

The students qualified for Saturday's event by winning spelling contests at their respective campuses, said Robin Ritchey, BSISD spelling bee coordinator.

FISD school bond nearing

FORSAN — School officials here have just about everything set for a bond election except for a final price tag.
Forsan independent School District officials are expected to call for a May bond election when they hold a special meeting Monday, Feb. 25, and will be likely be very busy during the next few days finalizing the proposal.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• CHARLIE RAY CARROLL, 43, transient, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• JOHN FLORES JR., 48, of 701 S. Lancaster, was arrested Sunday on a warrant from another agency.
• RONALD STANLEY HASELBY, 62, of Carlsbad, N.M., was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• ROGER LEE HOLMES, 64, of 3300 Ave. Y, was arrested Sunday on charges of interfering with an emergency phone call and assault causing bodily injury – family violence.

TEC dismisses Duncan complaint

The Texas Ethics Commission issued an order of dismissal in the complaint against Big Spring Mayor Tommy Duncan, saying there was insufficient evidence a violation of law or rules administered by the agency had occurred.

BSHS art students competing at regional meet

Big Spring High School art students are hoping to shine at this weekend's Visual Arts Scholastic Event regional meet in Odessa.

Seventeen BSHS students exhibiting a total of 30 works are entered in the regional meet, being held at Odessa Permian High School.

Students who medal at this weekend's meet advance to the state VASE exhibition, to be held in Bryan this March.

High School Art Teacher Judy Terelestsky said she believes many of her students' entries are state meet worthy.

Despite gains, BSISD test scores lag behind region

Big Spring school officials say improvement has been made on standardized test scores, but even more improvement is needed to bring the local district in line with other schools in this region.

Big Spring Independent School District has been operating under the black cloud of an Academically Unacceptable rating for the past three years, mainly because of poor student scores on state standardized tests, so major efforts have been made to improve both classroom and test performance.

Quick action helps quell wildfire

Local firefighters responded to a wildfire near the intersection of E. County Road 34 and N. County Road 37 Thursday afternoon after a controlled burn being conducted by a number of ranchers got out of control.

According to Howard County Volunteer Fire Department Chief Tommy Sullivan, the ranchers were attempting to burn off between 200 and 250 acres in the area.

• JEREMY RYAN MINTER, 33, of 3310 Ave. X, was arrested Thursday on a warrant for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
• ERIC WAYNE DEAL, 46, of 5700 Cedar Rd., was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
• LORI ANN BENAVIDEZ, 43, of 710 Willia, was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
• CALIBER FAYE VIGNEAU, 24, of 1002 N. Main St. Apt. 55, was arrested Thursday on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
