FISD bond proposal to get public review

FORSAN — A second public meeting pertaining to Forsan Independent School District's $23.8 million bond proposal will be held at 6 p.m. Monday in the secondary campus auditorium.
FISD voters will head to the polls in May to decide the fate of the bond issue, which would finance construction of a new elementary campus and extensive renovations at the junior high/high school building.
Early voting begins April 29, while election day is May 11.
The meeting will include presentations from architects and financial advisors, followed by a question-and-answer session.

Ag complex completed at HC

Howard College officials are about to put the wraps on another construction project.
Trustees will hear updates on a variety of construction projects when they hold their monthly meeting at 12:30 p.m. Monday in the student union building's Tumbleweed Room.
End of construction of the Broughton Agriculture Complex will be celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and public tours May 1.
The complex, which consists of an open-air pavilion, show barn and classroom building, was financed through a $2.6 million donation to the college from the C.G. Broughton Foundation.

Software to aid county, schools

Howard County commissioners will meet Monday morning to discuss a number of issues, including the use of a new computer application to help improve security at the county courthouse.
According to County Judge Mark Barr, the program — known as Copsync — will basically turn every operational computer in the courthouse into a way to reach out to law enforcement if something goes wrong.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. 04/19/13 and 7 a.m. today:
• DONNIE RAY SCHMALTZ, 27, of 2004 N. Monticello, Big Spring, Texas was arrested Friday on a charge of theft greater than or equal to $50 but no greater than $500, all other.
• JOHN GERARD ESCOVEDO, 34, of 2902 E. IH 20, Big Spring was arrested Friday on a charge of sex offenders duty to register with previous conviction.
• ALFONSO GARCIA RAMOS JR., 26, OF 2604 Dow Dr., Big Spring was arrested Friday on a charge of assault: family violence threat or offensive touch.

4 arrested on kidnapping charges

Four Big Spring residents remain in the custody of the Howard County Detention Center following their arrest on charges of burglary and kidnapping Thursday morning, according to law enforcement officials.
An investigation into the incident continues.

All four were arrested on charges of burglary of a habitation with intent to commit other felony and kidnapping. Arrested were Ricardo Ramirez, 24, of 4004 Connally; Sophia Conception Marmolejo, 29, of 2521 Chanute; Juan Eduardo Diaz, 23, address not provided; and Abilene Renee Mojica, 30, of 1207 Sycamore.

Mayoral hopefuls cite experience

Infrastructure and forecasted growth attributed to the coming shale oil boom took center stage Thursday night as candidates for the mayoral seat on the Big Spring City Council presented their political platforms during a Meet the Candidates forum on the Howard College campus.

Candidates Larry McLellan and Roger Rodman — a third candidate, former city council member Manuel Ramirez Jr., bowed out of the race this week — spoke about their qualifications and unique views of the Crossroads area during the forum, held in the Hall Center for the Arts.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. 04/18/13 and 7 a.m. today:
• ANTHONY HEATH WRIGHT, 25, OF 1106 Stanford, Big Spring was arrested Thursday on charges of use or possession of illegal smoking material.
• HALIE MICHELLE BURNETT, 17, OF 2802 S. CR 1220, Midland, Texas was arrested Thursday on a warrant, other agency.
• TERYN ANTHONY GONZALEZ, 27, of 712 Colgate, Big Spring was arrested Thursday on a charge of possession of marijuana less than or equal to 2 ounces in a drug free zone.

Major meth supplier sentenced

SAN ANGELO — A man described as “the Mexican Mafia methamphetamine supplier from Lubbock to San Angelo” was sentenced to federal prison Wednesday after entering a guilty plea last year.

Eric Cortez Flores, 32, a ranking member of the Mexican Mafia, was sentenced to 360 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Sam R. Cummings. Flores had pleaded guilty in November 2012 to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine.

Award-winning BSHS bands in concert Sunday

Strike up the (award-winning) band.

The Big Spring High School band, fresh off another sweepstakes award winning performance, will hold a free public concert at 2 p.m. Sunday in the high school auditorium.

The program will feature both the BSHS Honor Band and Symphonic Band, which recently competed in the University Interscholastic League Band Contest in Odessa.

• JERRY ALLEN CHANCY, 42, of 107 W. 21st St. Big Spring, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant other agency.
• RONALD STANLEY HASELBY, 62, of 1302 Tucson, Big Spring was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication.
• RICARDO RAMIREZ, 24, of 4004 Connolly, Big Spring was arrested Thursday on charges of burglary of a habitation and intend other felony, kidnapping.
