City posts boil-water notice

Tuesday's water line break near the city treatment plant caused more than inconvenience to residents — it caused a health hazard.

Big Spring officials issued a “boil water” advisory to city residents Tuesday afternoon, saying the water was unsafe to consume.

Interim Public Works Director Johnny Womack said Tuesday's water main break, which occurred next to the city water treatment plant on Virginia Street, forced pressure levels below state-mandated levels.

City council to parked cars: Get off our lawns

Get that car off your lawn.

Fed up with what they call eyesores, Big Spring City Council members expressed overwhelming support during their Tuesday meeting for tougher codes to force residents to rid their front yards of parked vehicles.

Dr. Sparks’ contract extended

Extension of the college president’s contract and updates on existing projects were on tap at the Howard County Junior College District’s Board of Trustees meeting Monday.

Trustees began the meeting early by entering into executive session to evaluate the performance of college president Dr. Cheryl Sparks, who has served in the role for the past 22 years. She received another positive nod from trustees, who voted to extend her contract two years.

City workers repairing water main break

January 28, 2014

Cold weather has claimed its first water main of the year, city officials said this morning.

Residents in the Kentwood area of Big Spring were without water this morning after a 20-inch line broke around midnight, said Johnny Womack, interim public works director.

Repair work was expected to be complete by the end of the day, Womack added.

Don't forget to register to vote

With state and municipal elections only a few months away, officials are urging Howard County residents to make sure they are properly registered to vote.

February 3 is the final day to register to vote or make a change of address before the March 3 primary election, Bloom noted.

A Big Spring man was indicted on a murder charge following this week's session of the Howard County Grand Jury.

Lenorah man killed in traffic accident

January 24, 2014

A 22-year-old man was killed in a two-vehicle collision early Thursday morning on Andrew’s Highway.

Zachariah Dylan Perez of Lenorah was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Justice of the Peace, Precent 2 Linda Halfmann, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Midland office.
