Pops rehearsals begin Tuesday

Chorus rehearsals for this year’s Pops in the Park concert will begin Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church.
“We have a wonderful program planned for this year's Independence Day celebration,” said Dr. Keith Graumann, music director.

Alleged gunman, robbery suspect indicted

A Big Spring man accused of firing off shots inside a local automobile dealership, stealing a car and leading authorities on a high-speed chase is one of 23 people indicted during this week’s session of the Howard County Grand Jury.

Michael Brandon Fosse, 29, was indicted on a single count of aggravated robbery for his alleged role in a lunchtime rampage that occurred Feb. 26.

Knight, Freeman top FHS students

FORSAN — Ali Knight and Chandler Freeman are the valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, of the 2014 Forsan High School graduating class.

Graduation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the high school gymnasium, 411 West Sixth St. Forsan.

United Way agencies will stay the same

United Way of Big Spring and Howard County has announced the new list of agencies — 17 total for 2015.

The board of directors has decided to accept the previous 17 agencies.

As there were no new applications,“The list is the same as last year,” Executive Director Sandy Stewart said.

BSHS graduation scheduled Friday

Big Spring High School will hold commencement ceremonies for the 2014 graduating class at 8 p.m. Friday at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum, 1001 Birdwell Lane.

Tulsi Patel is the valedictorian and Brianna Kight is the salutatorian.

Fitzgibbons, Shaw win party runoffs

Bob Fitzgibbons and Connie Shaw were victorious in the two Howard County races in Tuesday’s primary runoff election, winning the Republican nomination in their respective justice of the peace races.

Storms take their toll

Lupe Brito and her family spent her Monday night riding out the raging storm in the closet of their house in the 3900 block of East Highway 350.

Lupe describes seeing what sounds like a tornado funnel forming in the large open field across from her home and the wind sounding as a deep, pulsating roar. Rain and hail hit the windows as the family huddled in the closet, Lupe said.

Super cell storms sweep area

All that rain this area received during the weekend? That was just the warm-up act.

A pair of “super cell” storm systems swept through Howard and Glasscock counties Monday, spawning tornadoes, high wind and hail while dumping a great deal of rain on an area already soaked by three days of precipitation.

Memorial services honor fallen veterans

The rainy weather broke temporarily in the Crossroads area Monday, providing a sunny day for memorial ceremonies before returning with dark skies and thunderstorms.

A group of people gathered around at the Vietnam Memorial late Monday morning for a brief ceremony to honor all veterans who have served their county.
