Hoops, Goals and Dreams Friday

March Madness is coming to Big Spring Friday.

Teams from across West Texas will compete in the 11th Annual Hoops, Dreams and Goals Basketball Tournament at Howard College’s Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.

“The country may have March Madness that they love and embrace, but at West Texas Centers, we have our own version of March Madness, and that’s ‘Hoops, Dreams and Goals,’” West Texas Centers CEO Shelley Smith said

BSHS thespians ready for UIL district one-act play contest

They’re ready to take the stage.

The Big Spring High School Theater Production class will compete Saturday at Snyder High School for the University Interscholastic League District One Act Play competition.

The six schools competing are Big Spring, Lamesa, Levelland, Snyder, Sweetwater and Lubbock Estacado.

Teacher confesses to improper relationship

March 25, 2015

According to Big Spring Police, a 22-year-old substitute teacher with Big Spring ISD confessed to having an improper relationship with a student.
On Wednesday, March 18, Big Spring police officers responded to a call in reference to a possible improper relationship between an educator and student. According to a news release from the Lt. Brian Gordon. Big Spring detectives began an investigation after being notified of a possible incident.

Vaping ban passes

After heated discussion, ordinance OKed, 5-2

A second reading of an amended ordinance including electronic vaping devices (also known as electronic cigarettes) in the city of Big Spring’s current anti-smoking laws produced plenty of heated discussion but eventually passed city council muster Tuesday night.
By a 5-to-2 vote (only Justin Myers and Marvin Boyd opposed the measure), the council approved the amended ordinance, which should take effect within the next few weeks.

Germanwings Flight 9525 Crashes in French Alps With 150 People Onboard

March 24, 2015

An Airbus with 150 people onboard crashed in the southern French Alps on Tuesday, officials said. The A320, operated by Lufthansa’s budget airline Germanwings, was flying from Barcelona to Dusseldorf and went down in the Digne region of the Alps-De-Haute Province, according to Reuters. There were 144 passengers, two pilots and four crew members, Germanwings said. "We are sorry to confirm that flight 4U9525 is an accident," the airline said on Twitter.

Police arrest substitute teacher

March 24, 2015

A 22-year-old substitute teacher for Big Spring ISD was arrested Monday on a charge of improper relationship — educator and student.

According to George Bancroft, Big Spring ISD public relations coordinator, Tevian Deantra Parnell was only recently hired as a substitute teacher for the school system.

BSHS art students shine at UIL event

March 24, 2015

During Spring break, seven art students represented Big Spring High School at the University Interscholastic League’s Visual Arts Scholastic Event regional and area contest in Odessa.

All seven students — Ashlen Eckert, Elisa Hernandez, Taylor Holloway, Samantha Murphy, Amanda Renteria, Destiny Robles and Jaren Walsh received received regional medals for their art works. Holloway and Murphy received two regional medals for their works.

Man allegedly forces 20-year-old by gunpoint to an ATM

March 23, 2015

A Big Spring man is cooling his heels in jail this morning after being arrested on a charge of aggravated robbery when he allegedly forced a young women, at gunpoint, to remove funds from an ATM.
Law enforcement officers confirmed this morning that Lester Claude Duffer of 2506 Hunter St. remained in jail this morning.

Vaping back on the agenda for city council

Proponents of electronic cigarettes will have one last chance to convince the Big Spring City Council not to outlaw the practice in public places.
The council will consider the second and final reading of an ordinance banning the use of electronic vaping devices — more commonly known as electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes — in public places when they meet in council chambers at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Veterans home to host annual Easter egg hunt

The Easter Bunny will have some help this year by way of the veterans and staff at the Lamun-Lusk Sanchez Veterans Home.
On Saturday from 1:30 p.m. until 4 p.m., the veterans home will be hosting its annual community-wide easter egg hunt.
