Sen. Kel Seliger continues making his way fhrough the Panhandle, South Plains and Permian Basin in preparation for the 84th Texas Legislature that convenes in January.

Seliger, from Amarillo, narrowly defeated fellow Republican and Midland Mayor Mike Canon in the party primaries March 4. And though he faces Libertarian Party of Texas candidate Steven Gibson in the Nov. 4 general election, no Libertarian has won — or come close to winning — a legislative seat or statewide office in Texas.

Big Spring State Hospital to celebrate 75th anniversary

Big Spring State Hospital will celebrate its 75th anniversary Wednesday with a public reception and ceremony reflecting on how the hospital has evolved since it opened in 1939.

The ceremony – “Paving Pathways to Recovery” - begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Allred Building Auditorium.

Northside Center provides vets with helping hand

A local organization is providing services for U.S. veterans to help them to get back on their feet.

Every Friday, a group of veterans from the Big Spring VAMC travel to the Northside Community Center (NCC) to attend classes on basic computer skills, receive legal aid counseling or just to use the center’s computer resources to check e-mail and browse the internet.

Walker, Bowles family top honorees at Ag luncheon

Royce Walker and Karla and Don Bowles were the top honorees at Thursday’s annual Ag Appreciation Luncheon.

Walker was honored at the Chamber of Commerce-sponsored luncheon as the Agriculture Producer of the Year, while the Bowles, owners of Howard County Feed and Supply, were awarded as Agriculture Business of the Year.

Old Sorehead Trade Days return Saturday and Sunday

STANTON — The historic downtown streets of Stanton will be packed to capacity this weekend with vendors hawking what they and bargain hunters hope are the best deals in the Permian Basin.

With 620 vendors filling nine city blocks and seven buildings, Shawna Burch, Old Sorehead Trade Days executive director, said the thrice-annual event is booked solid for vendor booths.

Workforce helps inmates do good while doing time

Credit should always be given where credit is due. No one deserves that more than the five men who work without pay or any guaranteed time off their sentence to keep Big Spring and its surrounding areas humming along. Often erroneously misidentified with the Federal Correctional Institute, these five men work for the Howard County Sheriff’s Workforce.

“They do everything around town,” said HCSW Sgt. John Spence who laments that they don’t get the credit they deserve for all the hard work they do.

Murphys named family of the year

Every year for the past 20 years, the Samaritan Counseling Center asks community leaders, church leaders, past honorees and others for nominations to honor families, “Who are not perfect, but whose life trajectory reflects the values and traits Samaritan Counseling Center strives to espouse and teach every day.”

Based on the nomination forms and returned information, families in the four counties that have SCC offices; Ector, Andrews, Midland and Howard, a committee decides who best meets the criteria.
